habitat today is like a disconnected (private) PDS, but it's not necessarily local to your device. i think permissioned spaces will give *some* of the same affordances we've built, but we're doing some additonal stuff on top to make it usable for devs + local-first apps
we should chat :)
We're excited as hell to go from posting --> releasing. And hopefully partnering with @oaklog.org !
thank you!! @gov.glados.computer we'll see you again soon :)
my favorite thing about #atmosphereconf is that it wasnt a technical conference. ppl were there to talk about humanity, not some tech stack
watch @kissane.myatproto.social's "Landslide", or @offline.arushibandi.com's "Rewilding" talks to get a sense
genuinely spiritual manifestos for a wounded web
i was nervous to give a "heartfelt" talk as @notplants.bsky.social called it, so i'm relieved and happy it resonated with people ❤️
just wow.
thank you so much @bmann.ca @ngerakines.me @knowtheory.net @essentialrandom.bsky.social @lucca.northsky.team and everyone else who helped put on such an amazing conference!
feeling inspired for what's next and grateful to be a part of this community.
Collective action school is the best!!!!!
habitat's mission 1. lower the barrier of entry for who can build the social internet • Building a fully functioning "app" should be as easy as creating a website • Developers shouldn't need to store user data in order to provide
I’m so excited to see @habitat.network grow
@offline.arushibandi.com killing it
Thanks Juliet for putting together this thread <3
Rewilding the social internet @offline.arushibandi.com #atmosphereconf
excited to write, no i mean give, this talk!
is this a spicy take: local-first needs atproto <3
indeed i do!
i blame Boris for this
This is your ONE chance to imagine the future!!!!
We'll miss you! I'm really interested in hearing from people how they'd rather interact on platforms online
Ooooh yeah! Are you coming to the conf? This is exactly what the workshop with @ivansigal.eurosky.social @christian.bsky.social and I is gonna about! Collaborating and imagining new modalities to connect online.
that makes sense, apps both request the credential and tell the owner they want notifications
also papers over the consent problem we've brought up, by obscuring it i think -- if i'm part of a space i don't really "know" which appviews have my data (unless there's some way to ask the owner?)
"Real-time sync is achieved by sending write notifications to syncing services. Member PDSes don't necessarily know the full list of sync services, so notifications are routed through the space owner."
maybe I missed this somewhere, but: how do space owners know where to route write notifications?
I am really looking forward to Arushi's @offline.arushibandi.com talk.
As we were wrapping #AtmosphereConf 2025, she said thank you & a few other kind words on her way out the door.
So I'm very pleased to see this talk, "in conversation with several of the talks from last year"
Thanks so much Boris for everything you're doing for the conference & community!!
I can't wait to give this one.
wow was trevor paglen's talk at the sf moma a trip. one message in particular that feels relevant to @habitat.network
"the images are now staring back"
control over our data means no spying, and no spying means we are all less susceptible to manipulation online. more important now than ever.
yes we'll be there!! to be completely transparent we didn't end up implementing our idea using UCANs, but we were reasoning about it amongst other options
would love to chat
Oooh I gotta check this out. Habitat 🤝 Habit
if there's anything I've realized over the last month, it's that there are no *technical reasons* we can't have the internet we want. slowly, but surely (leaflet by leaflet) we're building that.
a calendar app that can't track you. even with its minimal interface, what a magical feeling 🌱
does it get more SF than posting your startup's landing page on LinkedIn from cafe reveille?
habitat.network
We're not actually syncing record content (for that reason exactly, don't want to take a stance on conflict resolution), just enough metadata for user A to know "hey there's something user B has that I care about". But all this and more will be explained in our next post...
this is a sneak peak of our next blog post for @habitat.network but we're calling our equivalent of buckets: "cliques"!
what we're doing is pretty similar to where y'all landed, but with the change that the "syncers" are PDS'es rather than AppViews, in order to deliver local-first experiences
