It's a fox in a tree. That's not a metaphor for anything, but there is a long crooked branch coming off the trunk of a dogwood -- the branch goes from lower right to upper left. And upon that branch is a red (really, orange) fox. The fox is lean and long -- a narrow snout, ears tucked back a bit, floofy talk curled downward. The fur is mostly orange but peppered with a kind of faded orange-gray at the haunches. The fox is trying to get to a bird feeder that is out of frame. So, to me that means, the fox is in a tree and going for the bird food, which suggests foxes are birds. It's just science. Foxes are birds. Nothing matters anyway, so foxes might as well be birds. Copy editors simply need to possess constant curiosity, the instinct to look up things that smell even slightly off, the ability to listen to what a writer is doing before laying down the law, and a dictionary or two.
