Looks like we will be blessed with clear skies and 13c on race day tomorrow

My calf is still at me dammit but think I’ll be able for it

Probs a lot more hiking than I wanted to but will get there

Oh my - just saw this. Must have been a bit scary - hydration is so difficult! Especially if you are running in a much different temp than you trained in...

Good to see you are ok

As an American expat who sees Europe as his home, this one feels personal.

Our back yard chose democracy

That matters

America should take note.

JD Vance flew to Budapest last week to prop up Orbán

Hungarians responded by throwing Orbán out in the biggest landslide in a generation

With the US lurching into authoritarianism, having Europe’s most entrenched strongman get demolished at the ballot box was inspiring

There’s hope yet

David Guest (@davidguest) Water, water everywhere, and not a drop to drink? A steady flow of brightly coloured singlets will spill its way through the streets of Paris this weekend for the annual marathon — a heart-warming s...

París Marathon is eliminating cups and bottles. Runners have to bring own flasks and refill.

You can imagine the “outrage”

It will affect times for sure - but is it the right decision?

Interesting question.

good tip!

Im not the biggest guy and got a small vest. It fits great - but when full or with bladder mate thinks the front is too open and doesnt provide enough support.

So I think this is the nail in the coffin, that there is an issue with fit- I will try on a medium he has and see

Dear Prudence

My friend is new to ultras and decided the smart move was to chase a marathon PB and then start stacking miles and chasing vert for a mountain ultra

His wife thinks it's a midlife crisis.

I think he's just an idiot.

Can we both be right?

Asking for a friend

I do that as well - works well in the ultimate direction but I can’t get the Salomon to not bounce around a bit. Especially as it empties more. I think I also just don’t like the weight on the back vs front maybe part of it

Will look at belt as option!

My fav vest as well

I used ice in bladder when doing heat training in Spain, cooling effect was great, running with ice in bladder not so much, but I’m still figuring out the bladder

I really would like to get away from the bladder but I don’t have the experience to feel save carrying less than 2l

Amazing - 10k is a lot.

How did the pack feel?

I have an ultimate direction and Salomon pack but neither felt great with a bladder in them

But I don’t see a way to only run with flasks either as the distance between some checkpoints is too far…

Maybe I just need to get faster 🤣

Exciting! Nothing says “ready for coco” like a 60k as a “training run”!

Go get em Shasta

Yup. I can remember there used to be some races in my local area back in the day where you could donate your bib if you were unable to run.

They had a service that supported runners that were a bit tighter in cash than others - often younger runners as well and they would handle transferring bibs

Ahh daylight savings time in Wicklow - it’s like having a second day after work. My favourite time of year

#Strava: "Here's an API for your data."
#Garmin: "Your data? Our servers. Get fucked."

They broke unofficial access Mar 19th because too many "not-geeks" started using AI on their own fitness data with claude

Best watches worst data ethos

I have the body of a masters athlete but the patience of a toddler

Had my largest vert week in 5mths @ 12000’ and ended week on my hardest local route - foolish

Anxious about the SwissAlps 100 race in August with 22000’ climbing

Stick to the plan - be patient don’t chase vert

Thanks for that.

I think the disappointment stems from the fact I ran it as the runner I thought I was and it exposed me as the runner I really was.

I’ll try again next year, I start each season with a marathon so let’s see if I can get a sub 3:30 next time

4 weeks ago 1 0 1 0

Yea I can imagine. A race of this scale seems like no matter the training you would never feel ready. Like you just take where you are at and jump and see what happens

The Queen of Races Why every runner should devote at least one serious season to the road marathon

“the marathon is long enough to expose you and fast enough to punish you

Ultras can be more mysterious

Shorter races can be more explosive

The road marathon, though, remains the clearest classroom many of us will ever enter”

Great article
