On Professional Development for Teachers in Irish Schools — Julian Girdham Some considerations on CPD in post-primary schools in Ireland.

For bookmarking, and later reading if interested. Wrote this two years ago and much chimes with points being made tonight at #edchatie - key point being whether such opportunities are sustainable long-term.

In almost 40 years of teaching, I have yet to find a teacher who prepares Leaving Cert students by ‘rote learning’ There are grounds to criticise the English exam, but it can only be successfully tackled with critical thinking

Following a recent article about the Leaving Certificate, worth restating that -

👉spreading assessment will increase, not mitigate, stress.
👉None of the proposals are for 'continuous assessment'.
👉English Leaving Cert is not a test of rote learning.

These comments from Norma Foley at the INTO’s education debate are beginning to cause a stir in teacher circles.

Is the abject shortage of teachers - where it’s almost impossible to get a substitute teacher - a ‘crisis’?

The minister would prefer to label it an “opportunity”…

Simon's post here is a good way to look at Irish voting.

Even if you don't have a preferred #1,2,3 preference, sometimes PR-STV means thinking about who you absolutely don't want to get in and working backwards from there.

Opinion: 'Teacher bashing' is a global phenomenon, absolving governments of their failed policies DCU’s Dr Alan Gorman says teacher bashing is happening everywhere, and it suits the political and corporate class to scapegoat the profession.

Sharing a piece I wrote this week for @thejournal.ie examining how ‘teacher bashing’ in media narratives shapes public perception, influences policies, and diverts attention from education reform @dcuioe.bsky.social

Election 2024: Education — 'Forget phone pouches. Leaving Cert projects are a bigger problem' Teacher Conor Murphy says the rollout of Leaving Cert projects should be paused for two reasons: It will further disadvantage less privileged students, and AI will make nonsense of the results

I was interviewed by Jess Casey at The Irish Examiner to discuss what I considered was the major education issue of the election.
I spoke about Leaving Cert Redevelopment.

Love this. ‘Queue’ is from the French word with the same spelling (but pronounced as ‘kuh’) meaning an animal’s long tail.

In the 18th and 19th centuries it also referred to a pigtail and was sometimes spelled as ‘cue’, which gave us the name of the long thin rod used in snooker.

Trump announces RFK Jr as his pick to lead US health department A scion of Democratic dynasty, RFK Jr is known for embrace of anti-vaccine beliefs and other conspiracy theories

If you're new to RFK Jr studies, you may know about the vaccine & fluoride denial, but not that he's another pro-Kremlin voice in the incoming Trump administration. In business, I believe this is called a takeover.

Surrealing in the Years: Has everyone in this country forgotten how to run for election? I’m voting for the big newt.

"Going after teachers really only makes sense if your electorate is comprised solely of Bart Simpson and those frightfully drawn children from The Beano."

It's this week's column! Which I'm now sharing here, on Bluesky, because it seems like this place is actually kind of working out!
