Our ongoing work is exploring the mechanisms through which different helminths can modify the bile acid pool in mouse models, and the consequences of helminth infection induced disruptions to the bile acid pool for the health of the host :)

We are excited to now add to these findings through exploring associations between different helminth infections and the fecal bile acid pool in school aged children.

Frontiers | Chronic small intestinal helminth infection perturbs bile acid homeostasis and disrupts bile acid signaling in the murine small intestine Soil-transmitted helminths are potent manipulators of the mammalian host immune system, and do so by dampening inflammation and inducing regulatory immune pa...

Given that bile acids can regulate many aspects of gut physiology and immunity, we wanted to explore how helminth infection status might impact the fecal bile acid pool in people. Our previous work has indicated that helminth infection can disrupt the gut bile acid pool in mice! shorturl.at/JW4My

Gut-dwelling helminths are directly exposed to bile acids in the mammalian intestinal tract, and some some blood fluke infections can cause pathology in the mammalian liver, the site of bile acid synthesis.

(Spoiler, different infection statuses are associated with shifts to the bile acid pool and these differences appear to be sex-dependent!)

In our latest work we've explored associations between the fecal bile acid pool and helminth infection status in school aged children in Uganda. Have a read and see what we found!

Delighted to share my latest publication as a PhD candidate in @drlarey.bsky.social’s lab at @uvicscience.bsky.social!
With our international collaborators we’re excited to share our findings on the associations between #helminths and fecal bile acids! 🪱

NASA is more than rockets and moonwalks. NASA is behind much of our everyday technology. From space discovery, to Air Jordans, to CAT scans, NASA has played a role. We get it all on less than a penny of every federal dollar. Now their science may be gutted by 50%.

The perils of being born in the Fall | Toronto Fringe Festival

Hey @spaikin.bsky.social -I've been on your show, you should come to mine! I like to think that just as I feel smarter after watching @tvotoday.bsky.social or listening to #onpoli podcast, people leave my show knowing more than they did coming in. So geeky that @jm-mcgrath.bsky.social would approve.

Thymic eosinophils: What are you doing here? Eosinophils are present in thymus of humans and mice, and the heterogeneity of thymic eosinophil populations, their functional capacities, and the factors

Did you know that there are eosinophils in the thymus? Are you curious about what they might be doing there? If so please have a read of our latest review, where Dominique Gatti has summarized the status of the field and outstanding questions on this topic! :)

Today we report that an engineered skin bacterium, swabbed gently on the head of a mouse, can unleash a potent antibody response against a pathogen. Could lead to topical vaccines that are applied in a cream. @djenetbousbaine.bsky.social led the charge... @natureportfolio.bsky.social 1/55
