Thanks for this post. The MTBoS helped develop my math network greatly and many of the math friendships I have developed over the years is due to online networking. I never had the fortune of meeting@druinok.bsky.social in person, but we had communicated via Twitter many times, & she will be missed.

I'm switching it around and calculating 75% of 60. Divide 60 in half to get 30, and then add half of 30 back (15) to get 45.

#iteachmath #mtbos Does anyone have a course for students who are NOT ready yet for Algebra 2? After the Algebra 1, Geometry sequence?? With all students having to enter at Algebra 1, but then want to be ready for college options, many juniors are taking Alg 2 that do not have the needed skills.

Of my 69 Algebra 2 students, I have 16 that missed test day the last 2 days and need to make them up. I feel so defeated right now. Year 25 is on the struggle bus....

I am really REALLY struggling with student retention and accountability this year in my Algebra 2 classes. Ideas or hints?? We've done activities, practice, notes, discussions...if 5-10 minutes have passed, it's like what we just did or talked about never happened! #iteachmath #mtbos

"What did you do your first day of break?" I'm at school at 8am ready for practice. Same for Friday. That's the part I forget about; winter sport coaches really don't get their breaks due to practices and games.

Then I previewed the quadratic formula for her and she saw the x=-b/2a in it! Her mind was blown!!

Did completing the square visually with the box method today in Algebra 2. Student had a genuinely happy 'aha' moment seeing that a solution of x=4+-3 mean the axis of symmetry was at x=4 and the intercepts were each 3 units away!

Still one of my most favorite random signs I've seen in quite a while!

It's Friday, I've given tests in 4 of my 6 sections, and I only have 21 tests that need to get made up from missing class. Sweet!

If someone had shown me this in high school, I would know a lot more math today. Integration was the first thing in math that seemed surprisingly difficult, and I assumed I just wasn't good at it rather than that it was inherently hard.

That's why I kinda hate geometry sequenced after Alg 1; it's just disguised stupid algebra problems. We forget about the geometry context and true relationship understanding the course can provide.

Classic! I had a colleague that would write test questions like that...and forget to see if the answers made any sense. Just blind algebra.

I've never thought of the problem you posed on all the years I've taught geometry...never went that next step. Great prompt for kids.
