Excited to see this out after years of work from many folks in the field and lab. @ben-glass.bsky.social did such a lovely job of doing this work justice! 2023 heatwave was no joke in Bocas.....

This is both of our lab's first time engaging in the ELife process and it has been fun! Lili's work is super integrative and we have learned a lot about the social context of anemonefish regulates phenotypic change to establish hierarchy. It is super fascinating!
Last, but definitely not least, we have joint Buston/Davies lab PhD student Lili Vizer. This paper represents an insane amount of data and Lili has done a beautiful job!

This paper really showcases the research that the Gilmore lab has been doing for decades and brings together a lot of the work we have done together over my last decade here at Boston University! This has been an amazing NSF-funded collaboration!
Next, we have the first publication from the amazing Gilmore/Davies lab postdoc, @ben-glass.bsky.social. He wrote this lovely invited review about our favorite transcription factor NFkB!

This work was really fun and probably the coolest finding was that we think that Endozoicomonas likely exists inside the symbiosome in Aiptasia because it was unaffected by antibiotics! Re-establishment of the microbiome also clearly involves the host immune system. Very fun!
First up we have Dr. Maria Valadez Ingersoll's third dissertation chapter that has now been published in Scientific Reports. "Symbiotic state affects microbiome recovery in a facultatively symbiotic cnidarian"

I keep telling myself to get more active on Bluesky but there hasn't really been a good reason. But yesterday, the Davies lab had three awesome pubs come online (I think this is a record!) so I really want to celebrate the mentees that made this incredible work happen!
SING Canada application are now open! Please share with Indigenous students and community members interested in the science and politics of genomics 🧬 All expenses paid.

So far we’ve got: running, crawling, sprinting, flying, swimming, burst speed, righting time, climbing… what are we missing?
I defended my PhD 10 years ago today. That was the least remarkable thing that happened that day. Sharing something I wrote about it last year. Since then "the horrors persist but so do we." And with dignity.

🧪 Dr. Emily Aguirre's final dissertation chapter is published! She isolated a putative bacterial symbiont then cocultured it with axenic algal symbionts to ask how it impacted growth and gene expression - results were unexpected but do support a beneficial relationship - read more here rdcu.be/eUKQz
