The 2-day CRC1218 PI Retreat at Schloss Burgbrohl has successfully concluded last week.
In a beautiful setting, the retreat brought together engaging scientific talks, lively discussions, and inspiring exchange.
We sincerely thank all participants for their contributions and enthusiasm!
We’re happy to announce that we’ve awarded a new Family Grant to support our postdoctoral researcher Marijana Croon (@marijanacroon.bsky.social).
The grant helps researchers balance excellent science with family responsibilities.
Congratulations, Marijana—we’re excited to support your work!
We’re excited to share that also this year, we’ve offset CO2 emissions for all travel grants awarded to our early career researchers in 2025! 🌱 The CRC1218 is committed to fostering scientific progress while protecting the planet🌍

Leucine reduces E3 ubiquitine ligase cofactor SEL1L at mitochondria, elevating OMM protein abundance to enhance metabolic respiration. The labs of Thorsten Hoppe and Jan Riemer (@riemerlab.bsky.social) furthermore assign a role to this cascade in metabolic disorders and cancer across species.
A publication rarity these days: An author list significantly shorter than the paper title!

Congratulations to our Advanced PostDoc Grant Awardee, Qiaochu Li (@qiaochuli.bsky.social), for her discoveries published in NCB [see thread]:
Congratulation also to the @riemerlab.bsky.social who just identified FAM136A as a new substrate of the mitochondrial disulphide relay and its implementations in IMS proteostasis and cellular fitness.

A wonderful collaborative effort of the CRC 1218:
The lab of Mafalda Escobar-Henriques reveals that C-terminally extended ubiquitin (CxUb) is essential for mitophagy, proteostasis and longevity through a previously undefined CxUb-Ufd2 axis.

Cell-to-mitochondria communication by regulating the translation of NEM mRNAs. The translation of NEM mRNAs serves as a crucial communication node, integrating incoming signals and output cellular responses. Translation is regulated by binding to RBPs, which respond to incoming cellular signals (e.g. mTORC1, AMPK and insulin) and control translation in both time and space. In turn, ribosomal stress caused by stalled ribosomes transmits information about mitochondrial status and initiates stress responses. In their Review, Eleonora Zilio, Elena Rugarli and colleagues @cecad.bsky.social @crc1218.bsky.social discuss the role of mitochondrial mRNA translation in cellular communication.
