Roadside "weed". Small, 5-petalled flowers, white with lilac stripes, each flower on its own stem. 8 flowers here, and several buds. Stem leaves are small; many round basal leaves form the background.

Terminal clusters (2) of flowers. Spiraea douglasii. They're left on the shrub over winter, and are now deep brown. (They start out deep pink.) Long, narrow, compact clusters on bare stems. This year's leaves haven't appeared yet.
Background; greens and browns and light areas (dead tree trunks, barkless) of a wetland and beaver pond.

Two life-sized figures created out of driftwood. On the right, a large "man" over 2 metres tall, all brown wood. His knees are slightly bent, arms hanging down, one hand a bit forward, as if holding something to offer to the bear. The bear, with his back to us, sits on a cut-off stump. He's small, barely a cub, even on the stump he's only half-thigh height to the Forest Guardian. (He looks like a Sasquatch, but friendlier. And the maker says he's a Forest Guardian.) He stands on a cement slab. Behind him, there's a gravel area, then trees. On the left, behind some trees, there are cars on a bridge.

Stones on a beach. The one in the centre is mottled grey and whitish, with a smear of red algae on the end. On top of the stone there are three large limpets, all with blue tips. One wears a brown and white checkerboard pattern, another has stripes going around it, black, brown, white. The third, on the left, has a black rim; the middle section is brown. Beside this one, there's a tiny, blackish (in the light, purple) snail with a cream spiral line.

Land/seascape: rocky beach, blue water, green hills beyond (with evergreens) and then blue hills in the distance. Under a blue sky with soft, white and grey clouds. On the right, under another evergreen-clad hill, a rounded brown and grey rock juts out into the water. (Brown up to the highest high-tide line, grey above.) The rock seems to have an unhappy face; long mouth turned down, squinty eye.

Brown and green water, with many specks of dust, bits of floating twigs, highlighted by the sunshine. In the centre, there's a swimming bug. On its back, with two jointed legs out to each side, like oars. The bug is black; the "paddles" are brown.

An old, rotting log with polypore (bracket) fungi growing in the crumbly interior. Because the tree fell after the first fungi grew, they are now standing on end, with the pores facing to the left. New fruiting bodies grow in the "proper" position, with the pores facing downwards. Three stacks of these fungi; in the one on the left, the original is clearly exposed; lumpy and cracked. The new ones are smooth and clean. Moss grows on top of the log; beneath, there's grass, dead maple leaves, new leaves.

A sparrow; mostly brown, with a wide grey stripe over the eye. It has its back to me, but looks at me over its shoulder. Not worried, just keeping an eye on me. Fanning out the tail feathers: showing off? It's perched among bare rose branches and twigs; there are a few old rose hips still hanging on, some red, some black. But there are also new spring buds, pink and green. Background, blue water.

The flowers are bright pink, borne on single stems, and hanging downward. 6 sharp tepals, spread wide and curved upwards at the tip. Yellow stamens hang beneath. The leaves beneath are mottled, green with white curvy lines. One frond of an evergreen fern hangs over the flowers at upper right.

Against a clear, blue sky, a branch of the Big-leaf maple tree lifts its large flower buds. 6 almost open buds: each one holds a cluster of greenish-yellow flower buds, the whole cluster wrapped in reddish bracts. Two smaller buds are still completely closed. Smooth grey bark on the branch. The leaves will appear once the flowers are completely open.

Calm water, a bit stripy. Three buffleheads are dawdling in the sunshine. One, centre rear, is a male, with a big, white crown, white body, and black neck, bill, and wing tops. On either side are females; one looks off to the left, showing the white cheek patch on her black head. Her breast is white, her back, black.
The water reflects the three birds. Behind them, it reflects dark woods and buildings on the far shore.

A tiny bird, always in motion. A black head and throat, tiny (tiny!) bill. A white, triangular streak goes from the bill down to the neck. The back is a rich, red-brown, chestnut colour, which gives the species its name, Poecile rufescens. The bird is clinging to the bark of a young red alder tree; almost-bare branches surround it, with a few new leaf buds showing; it's early spring. Grey sky.

The stems are green at the bottom, turning to orange near the top. Background; a grey wall.
