actions directly impact the environment for other important pollinators. Humans love honey and so managed beekeeping is not going away; reducing the impact of the industry is therefore key. /End
“managed” doing a lot of heavy lifting there.
Managed for honey? So maximum resource pressure on the environment? Or managed for low impact, with insulation to reduce energy use and flying times (so reducing disease transfer)? I run these workshops to get beekeepers thinking about how their /1
I think it may be a 2 way street on the bullying front. More important is disease transfer; managed honey bee apiaries are breeding grounds for diseases that can, via shared foraging sites, be readily transferred to the wild bee population.
Yes! Honey bees (which, full disclosure, I love) have become the poster girls of the pollination world but they are - or ought to be - a much smaller part of the MSM story. Moths, ants, spiders and solitary bees all perform equally - maybe more - important “services” and need to be up there too.
Thanks to everyone who joined this year’s Natural Beekeeping Workshop

Surrey Natural Bees are having trip to Wisley to be shown all the free living colonies there (in buildings and tree logs). Sunday 10th May, afternoon… why not join us!
Known locally as hurt, this is wild bilberry and forms an impossibly green carpet in the pine woods at this time.

That’s the fella.
Indeed.
Did you know that the preserved body of a man who died over 5000 years ago was found with hoof fungus (also known as tinder fungus)? (I guess he was on his way to a bbq at yours.)
Nice!

Good luck!
Interesting… here (UK) it isn’t native but seems to rub along in woodland without taking over. There’s pretty much the same amount of it in my little patch as there was 30 years ago….
For those who wonder about the name ,and whether it is garlicky or mustardy, this is an excellent read
