More dollars are being made outside of the US than in, because that's what oil and international trade uses. The end of petrodollars will undoubtedly bring about big change.

🤷 Simply a consequence of national-level austerity policies affecting research across EU countries, driven by budgetary or ideological reasons (or both)?

Thinking about this more, the 2 and 3 year bans are real career killers… who’d hire a tenure track candidate, or an (associate) professor that has one of those hanging around their necks?

A flowchart to find out if you're mansplaining. The first step is "did she ask you to explain it" and if the answer is yes, not mansplaining. This goes through various other scenarios, the funniest/saddest of which is "Do you have more relevant experience" and if the answer is "she has more" then it's "definitely mansplaining" while if the answer is "she has more and is a well known expert" then it's "Just stop talking now"

I am... really tempted to pin this to the top of my account... Print it and put it on my office door... send it as my email signature... wear it around my neck at conferences....

Every satellite is loaded with technology, so it’s only right that our largest satellite gets some new tech on board. A future Artemis mission will install seismometers on the moon to learn more about the internal lunar structure, and monitor how the surface behaves during moonquakes and impacts.

The tiny outback Australian town of Cooladdi, population two, is up for sale. It could be yours for $400,000 The new owner will serve as the Australian town’s postie, publican, cook and shopkeeper

Astronomers -- should we start a GoFundMe to buy this town?

It's got basic infrastructure, roads, and an extremely tiny population.

Additionally, it's under dark and quiet skies.

We can build observatories here!

Today is a good day to remember that Carl Sagan was as outspoken about the dangers of war and nuclear weapons as he was an advocate of space exploration.

From Chanda's lips to everyone's ears.

so many people don't understand the structure and the history of how we've gotten here. I'm going to enjoy the space pictures with one hand while I plot & scheme & dream how we get to space not chained to the military industrial complex.

It *is* possible.

"The real threat is a slow, comfortable drift toward not understanding what you're doing. Not a dramatic collapse. Not Skynet. Just a generation of researchers who can produce results but can't produce understanding."

AI privileges product over process. In art and writing, process is the work that develops our ideas and is what creates the human connection across space and time. AI robs us of process and connection. The current model for AI is theft all the way down: our work, intelligence, growth, & humanity.

Paying for the Open Journal of Astrophysics Everything is going well at OJAp, but it is not reasonable that the expense of running a journal that serves the global astrophysics community should fall entirely on one small University in Ireland. It won't be sustainable in the long run, either, if we continue to grow at the present rate. TCompare us with the Diamond Open Access publisher SCIPOST, which has a long list of sponsors covering its costs; we have none. I know that money is very tight in astrophysics these days but if you have access to any potential sources of funding - then please consider supporting OJAp!
