@garyseconomics.bsky.social hi Gary, don't know if this has been suggested before, but if the rich own a lot of debt, couldn't we "tax" them by forgiving part or all of that debt? Or would that just reward another set of people unfairly?

For some reason, the best voices on YouTube at this time seem to all be women (barring a few notable examples such as Hank Green): Heather Cox Richardson, Parkrose Permaculture, Life Take 2, Cult College, Brenna Perez, She's Right, and ofc Rebecca Watson.
@garyseconomics.bsky.social hey dude, that email you just sent out, none of the links work (video links, socials links) they all point to some weird URL (qovjzqb.clicks.mlsend.com)

Pretty interesting perspective
Dear Barry, Thank you for contacting me about this issue. The UK does not have a comprehensive, single wealth tax, but it does have several taxes on assets and wealth. Notably, the Wealth Tax Commission, which has no connection or link to the Government, found in 2020 that, if considering Inheritance Tax, Capital Gains Tax, Stamp Duty, and Stamp Duty Land Tax, the UK is among the top of the G7 countries for wealth taxes as a percentage of total wealth. The UK system is designed to ensure, among other things, that the richest in our society pay their fair share on their wealth and assets, with the tax system taxing wealth across many different economic activities, including acquisition, holding, transfer and disposal of assets and income derived from assets. These tax levers generate substantial revenue; according to the Office for Budget Responsibility, over 2024/25, the Exchequer will accrue Inheritance Tax revenues of £8.3 billion, Capital Gains Tax revenues of £15.7 billion, and property transaction taxes of £14.1 billion. Furthermore, estimates for 2023-24 suggest that the top 10 per cent of income taxpayers contributed around 60 per cent of income tax receipts. Indeed, the share of income tax revenue contributed by the top 1 per cent of taxpayers rose to 29 per cent. Moreover, despite Government MPs standing on a manifesto pledging to avoid raising tax on “working people”, at Autumn Budget 2024, the Chancellor announced £40 billion of tax increases. As a result of this, the tax burden will rise to 38.2 per cent of GDP by 2028-29 - the highest level in the country's history. Any changes to taxation will be announced in future budgets. I will closely monitor changes to the tax regime. Thank you again for taking the time to contact me.
@garyseconomics.bsky.social Hi Gary, here's the reply I got from Kemi Badenoch to the message you asked us to send out recently
I love the distinction he makes here between politicial democracy and economic democracy. Even here in the mother of all democracies, we have zero control over productive capacity.
What we need is a class awakening, across left and right, against the greed and narcissism of the billionaire class and their enablers, but I fear we have to suffer through worse to reach that point. 4 years of Trump might just do that

Done. So glad I replayed Inquisition and romanced Solas - got the ending I think he deserved.
So many good games to play this Xmas - currently halfway through DA: Veilguard, but The Long Dark and Project Zomboid both have massive new updates which deserve attention
The Witcher 4 trailer featuring Ciri is just awesome, can't wait

@jamesmoules.bsky.social Hi James, just read your piece on collaboration with other parties. Surely the answer is not collaboration, but a reformed voting system - like the Bill that Starmer just squashed in Parliament. Funny how Labour always talks up PR when not in power...
Favourite track of the day #24: "Games Without Frontiers" by Peter Gabriel, from his 4th solo album aka "Melt". A young Kate Bush sings "Jeux sans frontiers" but this line has universally been misinterpreted; I always heard "She's so funky, yeah" #favetracks
Favourite track of the day #23: "17 Days" by Prince, or "17 Days (The Rain Will Come Down, Then U Will Have 2 Choose. If U Believe, Look 2 The Dawn And U Shall Never Lose.)" by Prince And The Revolution. The 1st record I bought, a 7" single of "When Doves Cry", & I preferred the B-side #favetracks
Favourite track of the day #22: "Blown" by LFO, from the album "Sheath". One of the lesser known but massively influential British electronic acts of the 90s, signed to Warp Records. Appeared on the Warp-produced soundtrack to "Hardwar", a classic early PC game #favetracks
Good morning Bluesky. Today is a good day. Today, potholer54 released a new video. The world is technically a better place as a result. It's here, on YouTube, waiting for your attention:
Favourite track of the day #21: "Aloysius" by The Cocteau Twins, from "Treasure". It's hard to choose a favourite Cocteau Twins track, such an influential band. Elizabeth Fraser has not only an incredible voice but a unique style #favetracks
It's standard narcissistic behaviour
@nickgilbert.bsky.social did you see this? He talks a lot about checking your biases and critical thinking, but I was disappointed in the way he avoided taking a stance on Gaza.
