Four images to illustrate some prominent single-gene myths. Top left shows a photograph of a person deftly rolling their tongue into a U-shape. Top right shows a photograph of a person’s ear, highlighting the shape and features of the earlobe and cartilage. Bottom left shows a close-up photograph of a person’s eye, with a vivid blue colouration. Bottom right shows a photograph of a person poised to write with their left hand on the blank white page of a spiral-bound notebook.

Remember when you first learned about genetics at school? All those fascinating examples of human traits that are each apparently determined by just a single gene? Time to check in on some of your favourites to see how they’re doing. 🧬🧵🧪 1/n

@david-gokhman.bsky.social

great talk! Super interesting. Is CSGALNACT1 the correct gene name for CGAT1?
If so, I found the GWAS hits interesting.

If you know any students interested in grad school in population/evolutionary genetics, I’ve got the funding for an MSc or PhD student in my new lab at UBC in Vancouver. Please pass it on.

Flexible on topic, but some potential projects are listed here:

Have you all looked at diversity within an ancestry to break this confounding?

Cool talk and cool dataset!

2 years ago 1 0 1 0

. @laskyjr.bsky.social Diana showed higher diversity west of the Rocky Mountains compared to east of the Rockies.
But, the invasive cheatgrass in the east has one ancestry, while there are more ancestries/invasions west of the Rockies.

I'm looking to recruit a PhD student beginning in Fall 2024 to develop theory and methods for studying genotype-by-environment interactions. We're specifically interested in how GxE is affected by phenomena such as habitat choice. Please share and get in touch ASAP if interested!

So, either my letter wasn't obviously biased or chatGPT wasn't up to the task.

I know letters of recommendation can be biased. I also know machine learning models can be biased.
I asked ChatGPT to rewrite a letter I wrote for a female as if it was for a male. Surprisingly, it was quite unhelpful, only making minor changes.

I re-ran LDSC implemented in the LDER R package, artificially decreasing the sample size. Adjusting the sample size changed the h2 estimate (as expected), but the intercept stayed identical.

For me, my most creative acts come when I give my brain new information for it to make new connections.
So regardless of the mode (conference, documentary, audio book, journal article, lunch with colleague), feed your brain new info.

Clarity of writing very often reflects clarity of thought. When you see inscrutable text, particularly in your own field, there’s a good chance the authors didn’t truly understand it either

Mixed model GWA and LDscore regression

.@michelnivard.bsky.social you posted on the LDSC Google Group about some simulations you did testing LDSC on output from mixed model GWA.

The MLM affected the h2 estimate. Do you remember how the MLM affected the intercept?
