To my friends and colleagues in the #Drosophila world & the #genetics world who attended #TAGC24, Schedule F is what I warned y'all about.

So let's work with @jeremymberg.bsky.social ⬇️ and make public comments against the politicization of scientific review & grant award-making at #NIH & #NSF.

This is so true - and I often feel this !!! We tried some part of the interview style conversations at #TAGC24 and it went well, but there could be ways to play around with the format to get the scientific story through.

When I first made this account, I made it to go to #TAGC24 and use it network bc my Twitter had become way too angry about the things happening in society and not about my scientific work

Cellular organisation of the fly’s kidney
Detail of an adult Drosophila Malpighian (renal) tubule expressing membrane-bound GFP (green) in stellate cells – a population secondary intercalated cells required for transport of water – under the direction of c724GAL4, with staining of nuclei (DAPI, blue) and F-actin microfilaments (TRITC-conjugated phalloidin, magenta) in principal cells and stellate cells. Septate junctions are stained using an antibody for the junctional component Discs-large (anti-Dlg1, grey). The image was created by tiling of three separate maximum-intensity z projections obtained using a Nikon AX R NSPARC confocal.

Beyond honoured that my image of a Malpighian (renal) tubule has won the Genetic Society of America’s Drosophila Image Award 2024 at #TAGC24 #Dros24. Especially as the award is based not just on aesthetics but the science it represents doi.org/10.1242/jcs.....

I wrote about a project I am excited about!
Why are not all E. coli resistant to antibiotics?
The blog post also includes my #TAGC24 talk.

Thank you @GeneticsGSA for a spectacular conference last week! At #TAGC24 I gave my first talk at an international conference, unexpectedly reunited with old friends, and met so many great scientists who's excitement for science and learning was contagious 🦠

[Partial text of the syllabus]

Weeks 9 and 10 Overview

For weeks 9 and 10, we will be reading 8 papers total: 6 primary research papers and two perspectives. This works out to 2 per class meeting (i.e., 4 per week).

Each student is expected to read and be prepared to discuss every paper. However, each paper will also be assigned a facilitator. The facilitator will guide discussion and write up one page summaries in the style that Tony Long required for his section. This will constitute graded work for this part of the class. The last class session will be more open, and hopefully we'll be able to conduct it outside at Starbucks, Cafe Espresso, or similar.

For the first three days, during class, there will be three phases:

    introductory remarks (~10-20 minutes);
    paper discussion (2x~40-45 minutes);
    conclusions/synthesis (remaining time).

I'm teaching a two week stint in our graduate evolution reading class. I just returned from an invigorating
#TAGC24, and I'm super excited to be back in the lab. I'm feeling a lot of that energy bleeding into the grad course. Looking forward to the next two weeks!

3 cheers for #TAGC24! What a great meeting, and hats off to the organizers at all levels. Looks like I should have set aside an entire extra week to watch all the talks and look at all the posters I missed though.

my brain is mush, but my heart is full, after several nonstop days talking to friends old and new about the mysteries of life. it was pretty cool to see so many folks from my dev/neuro/evo communities across different species. tx Harmit Malik @barrlab.bsky.social for leading #TAGC24!

Gave a kind of scrap book talk for my Ira Herskowitz award lecture at #TAGC24. Really nice to think about all the awesome people I've gotten to work with on such cool science. I sat down and immediately thought of 3 people I forgot to mention Love the yeast community!

Didn't get 1 minute of downtime at my #TAGC24 poster tonight and ended up talking to people for the full 2 hours instead of just my assigned time! Kind of sad to miss all the other posters I meant to go visit, but loved all the ideas and feedback I got on where to take @yevolab.bsky.social

Amazed by the work done on C. elegans or S. cerevisae at #TAGC24. Why don’t we hear more about these illuminating systems in #Australia ´s research? #ARC should stop deterring it’s scientists from studying model organisms.

I wish I could write my favorite quote from @needhibhalla.bsky.social but I think I'll get us both in trouble so I'll tell you my second favorite:

"I came from immigrant parents and I don't think I could do what they did, to uproot themselves and come here" 🔥💯
