#PortfolioDay again, eh?

I'm Nick, and I do all manner of animation in games!

I'm currently on the lookout for my next project (along with... everyone) so let me know if your project needs an animator!

We're feeding our oceans and economy into this tech so that we can override thoughtful art direction with this bullshit, and so that idiots can ask ChatGPT what their favourite colour is. What are we even doing here?

"you need to learn how to use gAI or you'll get left behind!"

counterpoint!

the absolute fastest way to render yourself unemployable is to build your skillset around a tool that does your thinking for you, that everyone has access to, and that one company can change or take away at any time

People selling their places used to get shamed for basic photoshop touchups because they're misleading - that it's come to the point of full AI 'remodels' with no actual photos is crazy

Why chasing twitter's approval doesn't work The opinions you believe are universal are being fed to you by an algorithm designed to show you what you want.

Today's Load-bearing Tomato addresses the age old question:

"why don't the devs just [SOCIAL MEDIA OPINION]"

It turns out, "a lot of reasons", but if you never have to test your ideas, you never have to discover why they're not any good.

Despite everything, Unity and Adobe seem to be really sticky - people have short memories or seem to assume they’ve learned some sort of lesson and won’t pull more shit in the future šŸ˜•

The same people who fell for the revolutionary blockchain fell for the revolutionary crypto, and then the revolutionary NFTs, and then the revolutionary genAI.

It’s all the same snake oil salesmen going after the same marks every time.

I can’t wait to watch everyone fall for the next thing 🫠

Because his phone is (of course) at full volume, I can also hear that it’s getting a lot wrong. If he looked at the paragraph on the wall he’d know that, but it also wouldn’t come with a sycophantic pile of garbage praising him for asking great questions.

Am currently enjoying the very cool Mexican National Anthropology Museum. Lots of great info on the ancient people of America pre-European colonization.

On the other hand, there’s one guy in here taking pictures of stuff and asking ChatGPT what it is. Dude, just read the wall. It’s right there.

Frodo: I wish so much unbelievably stupid shit had not happened in my time

Gandalf: So do all who live to see such times. This is all exceptionally stupid, though

I often think about Jonathan Cooper's posts about TLOU2, that the studio ran out of seasoned game animators because its reputation was so bad and thus had to hire film folks who had to be taught how to put games together.

This resonates. There seems to be an ever-expanding level of inauthenticity (?) that seems to be expected these days in professional circles, and while I don’t fault anyone for participating in it I also know I vibe better with people who are comfortable being a bit more grounded.

I’m assuming the goal is to completely turn gaming into a subscription service where we all need to rent time on their GPUs because even baseline hardware will be so out of reach

TIME cover showing a bunch of billionaires imposed into the famous photo of engineers sitting on a steel bar as they're building a skyscraper.

Fucking incredible dystopian shit, comparing super rich people risking millions if not billions of lives just to make more money to people that risked their life actually building incredible things that would then make millions of dollars for super rich people.

I’m not even sure if there are any actual ’enemies’ in the entire video? They all seem to just be shooting at appliances.

All the same people who hawked NFTs at me are the ones who are telling me about how gen AI is the future - and that they're the bestest at predicting where the world is going. Somehow these failures to predict will mean nothing once we get to the next snake oil in like a year or so.

I’ve been working for 15 years as an animator and I can tell you without a doubt, the best fix I ever found for imposter syndrome is living a full life where your days and worth don’t hinge on whether or not you were a good animator today.

Two guys just sat down near me in a cafe and started worriedly whispering to each other about cooking the books, and I’ve never been so immediately invested in a conversation

The idea that 'AI can speed up dev cycles' would require a premise that dev cycles are long because people are taking forever to make assets (so you could replace them with shoddy slop and it'd go faster), which you could only believe is true if you've never actually tried to make a video game

Other people have better imposter syndrome than me I bet
