The economy is in free fall.

The markets are collapsing.

Our soldiers are dying.

Our sensitive information is being leaked over text message and gmail.

Random people are being kidnapped and sent to foreign torture prisons.

And Trump is fucking golfing.

Balsamroot is a composite flower (like all asters). Each of the petals is actually a “floret” bearing one enormous petal and a few minute ones creating a “ray floret”, which creates the illusion of a ring of petals.

Spring is upon us. I’m ready to be in the Grass Valley for this years Balsamroot bloom! Nearly all parts were used as a food source by the indigenous peoples. Asters rule!

I have proudly been a scientist my whole life. We are now watching the deliberate destruction of American science at the hands of the corrupt regime. Data is disappearing, young scientists are not getting paid, free speech is crushed. We can fix this, but we don't have much time to undo the harm. 🧪🌏

As a botany undergrad, I studied mycology. Fungi were thought of as non-green plants in the kingdom Plantae. Now, thanks to modern genetics, we know that fungi are more like very slow animals, in the clade Opisthokonta. A mushroom is closer to your dog than to a tree.

This is important. Nature-based education and experience, from very young age to very old can’t fix all the ills of society, but it is a big step in the right direction. It connects us to the real world and helps us understand what is really important.
