Some rough design guidelines*

1. Match effectiveness with importance
2. Avoid ambiguity
3. Locality is king / eyes beat memory
4. Establish viewing order
5. Layer, layer, layer
6. When in doubt, grid
7. Treat visual attributes like adjectives

 * These guidelines are drawn largely from my experience + personal preferences + the literature.
Design is messy, these are not perfect, others will disagree with me, etc. Caveat emptor.

These are the design guidelines I teach. From halfway through this deck: www.mjskay.com/presentation...

These days (for academic vis) I'd add "ensure natural visual operations correspond to meaningful operations in data space". Need to make slides for that.

Is it even legal to rebrand #stroopwafels as maple waffles and sell them as a Canadian souvenir without credit? Awesome to have thoughtful colleagues bring back delicious treats from work trips though! Thanks @leif-oltedal.bsky.social !

Are you a "data fiber artist" (representing data through knitting, crocheting, embroidery, sewing, weaving, etc.)? Please help my PhD student Sydney collect information about this fascinating practice for her thesis with this survey: skpurdue.github.io/DataFiberArts/.

Please repost! Thx!

PhysicsForums and the Dead Internet Theory An exposรฉ no one will read, about the widespread falsification of user posts in PhysicsForums, a scientific community founded in 2001. This is a microcosm of the death of the human-written Internet.

Horrifying story of LLM content being retroactively added to physicsforums, as if it had been posted by the original authors.

The 2024 to 2025 transition post Welcome to the year 2025! We are all still waiting for our flying cars, but if you donโ€™t like the indistinguishable-from-human talking AIs you got instead, you can have this traditional yearly transit...

Instead of a pure #retrospective, I've been writing a quite personal "year transition #blog post" every year for a few years now. The latest one has just been published!

Knitting my kid a pair of felted mittens in leftover yarn only to run out of leftover yarn midway ๐Ÿ˜… The solution is of course to shop for more yarn which will turn into leftover yarn. A vicious cycle I can't get mad about! โ˜บ๏ธ ๐Ÿงถ #knitting #raumavams

So I had a side project idea a while ago, but great news everyone! Other people have done it and they have done a better job than I ever could! Over on the Pudding, they have a beautiful interactive data story on the use of Lena over time. ๐Ÿ“Š

Wow! This is fantastic and they did a far better job than I ever would. Thanks a lot for sharing!

๐Ÿ“Š vs. ๐Ÿฅง

I made a tiny teaching tool to help me interactively demo + share differences between ๐Ÿ“Š and ๐Ÿฅง

Play: I find that tinkering with data + visuals in class reinforces understanding far more than slides or readings

Save + share: Copy the url to link the current data

Random side project idea, I would love to visualize the frequency of Lena image use in scientific publications over time, but no idea how to get the data... Does Google Scholar support image search?๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ“Š

I think with Twitter lists you are following individual accounts part of that lists (like the Bluesky starterpacks). With feeds it is possible to feature only specific posts, for example, this one requires the account to be on a list and then the post to have this emoticon: ๐Ÿ“Š. As I understand them!

Discovering feeds! Just found this great data visualization one! bsky.app/profile/did:... Any other recommendations?
