Throwing a civil servant under the bus will not distract from the fact that the PM asked no questions about Mandelson's vetting, that his office did not even want to conduct vetting, or that he made an outrageous error of judgement in appointing Mandelson in the first place.

The PM must resign.

The govt's move to decouple the price of electricity from the price of gas needs to be done right. If it’s voluntary, people’s bills may not decrease by as much as hoped. Reeves didn’t take up my invitation to send her @cmmonwealth.bsky.social's report – I’m going to send it anyway

Disabled parrot is undefeated alpha male of his group thanks to novel 'beak jousting' A study reported in Current Biology shows how physical disabilities in the animal world can be overcome through behavioral innovation. The report features an endangered kea parrot in captivity at New ...

Wonderful tale of animal innovation, and food for thought: "if a disabled animal can innovate its way to success, well-intentioned interventions like prosthetics might not always improve their quality of life."

So much to #Unlearn about non-human animals

Martin Wolf says “the mix of chaotic politics and a resilient economy can’t last” (Opinion, April 15). No one could question the former label, but what about the latter?

Can you really call a global economy resilient in which 363mn people are at risk of acute hunger, according to the World Food Programme, while 826mn people live on less than $3 a day, according to the World Bank, where economic activities have driven us over seven of the nine planetary boundaries as identified by the Stockholm Resilience Centre?

Or in the UK, where housing is unaffordable in most of the country, young graduates are loaded with debt with few job prospects and 1.9mn reported in work-related ill health, while our intelligence agencies report lack of food security is an acute threat?

We need economic systems that meet people’s needs, that leave no one behind, that don’t trash our planet and ensure we are providing a liveable future for coming generations. That’s what resilience looks like.

And it is not just Donald Trump’s fault that we are nowhere near that.

My letter in today's Financial Times. What does a truly resilient economy look like?
Surely it has to be preserving - or enhancing - Earth's systems on which we are entirely dependent, and ensuring a secure life for people?

Why we should ditch the most popular GCSE English texts Research shows that merely adding new books to set text lists doesn’t lead to true diversity in GCSE English. To really make a change, we need to start removing the old faithfuls, writes End Sexism in...

Any wonder popularity of English lit courses is collapsing?

"In 2024 only 5% of students across England and Wales studied a whole text by a female author at GCSE, while even fewer studied one by an author of colour"

Children not in education registers 'burdensome', says pilot Department for Education data suggests 117,000 children were missing from school in 2022-23

“It does not help children as much as the state, and we need to democratically set its limits, and demand accountable oversight and safeguards.”

All concerns expressed as government was pushing this through.

Tiny Microbes Hiding in Soil May Help Pull Rain From The Sky, Study Reveals Tiny organisms on the ground – bacteria and fungi – have a "superpower" that allows them to reach up into the atmosphere and pull down the rain, according to a recent study.

Bio-precipitation cycle with fungi: "As wind kicks up, their ice-making proteins are launched into the clouds. They act as powerful "seeds".

And industrial agriculture relies on extensive use of fungicide. We need to #Unlearn it

Vision zero takes account of everyone being capable of making mistakes, and the system takes account of that so a mistake by a child crossing a road or by someone driving along it does not result in death or injury. Hence road rules like speed limits.
