Species-specific oxygen sensing governs the initiation of vertebrate limb regeneration Why mammals cannot regenerate limbs like amphibians do presents a long-standing puzzle in biology. To uncover the underlying differences, we compared amputation responses of embryonic mouse (Mus musculus) and Xenopus laevis tadpole limbs. Lowering ...

🚨 Why can’t mammals regenerate limbs like frog tadpoles or salamanders?
In our new paper in @science.org , we show that species-specific oxygen sensing acts as a gatekeeper for initiating limb regeneration 🐭🐸

Proposed model of TBK1 function in Smed. Injection of a DNA-containing transfection mix activates TBK1 via a general wound response program and likely via nucleic acid sensors. Upon activation, TBK1 induces a transcriptional response and antagonizes its own inhibition by promoting release of Rapunzel proteins.

Happy #CtenophoreCtuesday! Comb jellies have eight plates of long, fused cilia, called "ctenes" that beat in synchronization to propel them. The cilia act like prisms, breaking up ambient light into a shimmering rainbow effect. Credit video to Teresa Zgoda (www.instagram.com/taz_photo_/). #SciArt πŸͺΌπŸ₯

I wanted them to admit it.
The EMBO is funded our tax payer money. I don't have to agree with all their decisions, but I do feel like we can have a say on how they spend money besides research funding of grants and meeting support. I'd vote to not pay AI companies and to support artists instead.
