It’s no secret that it’s hard to make it as a conductor or director in opera. But why is the career so difficult?

I’m running a survey to understand how conductors & directors navigate the field—and what could make it better.

Comment “survey” & I’ll send you the link when available!

JD Vance clearly plagiarizing titles of two bell hooks books.

I thought I couldn't have more contempt for him. #Lit

Meanwhile in the USA 🇺🇸 …

Just when you thought the office of POTUS couldn’t be any further debased than it already has been, the latest incumbent, reaches to further embarrassing and humiliating depths.

How long will Americans continue to endure this?

10 years on, still one of my favourite, and certainly most dramatic photos of Parliament Hill, taken at dusk, on Good Friday, 25 March, 2016.

I love this photo!

There is something so special about this architecture, and it resonates so powerfully for me, as the background to my early childhood memories of growing up in Glasgow.

Mind you, back in the day I remember these buildings being much darker and sootier than this gleaming red!

If you’ve ever lost yourself in the all-encompassing, compulsively readable 5-volume The Cazalet Chronicles you’ll need no further recommendation from me. But there’s so much more to Elizabeth Jane Howard. Her startling The Long View is, I swear, written with a scalpel.
Happy birthday to her.
