I had to change the shirt situation for this drawing commission∙∙the gods were kind and allowed for deep tissue erasure. I tell you, erasing was a holy practice in the early days and remains embedded in the practice

Compositions can take a while to figure out. Key components have to be locked in, but I have learned that for my work at least, I need literal room for the unexpected to appear

Wow what a tradition!
A painter's trick for rejiggering a painting can involve taking a step back and reworking the values and composition from a black and white printout
I am stoked that 'Hoodie' is a finalist in Strokes of Genius, the annual drawing competition sponsored by Artists Magazine and Artists Network. This drawing gets around🌟

My sister sent my drawing of our 2nd great grandfather to an historic Club of which she is a member. This club features paintings of American generals, a rank that our grandfather also achieved. Hopefully, they will be inspired to hire me to paint his portrait.
The drawing is 10x8" on Strathmore.
Drawing the legendary John Carrasco. The beard took as long as the face

Every day is earth day. Issue #27 of 𝑫𝒂𝒓𝒌 𝑴𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏 arrived at my doorstep yesterday. Full of stories, reflections, poetry, and art, ‘ a collection revolving around bodies, human and creaturely, plant and mineral, in an era of planetary breakdown.’ My painting entitled ‘Grandfather’ is included.
This drawing from a Zoom live session was 2 hours including model breaks. All told, it is about 1 hour 35 minutes of active posing. This practice keeps me fit for commissions. And AI will never replace it🔆

Prepping for drawing commissions with the mechanical pencil. Using the sharpest point on toothless paper requires utmost concentration

Progress shots from a model on Zoom. I treat these sessions as exercises in seeing how well I can do in a time frame without additional references. I truly love cultivating and maintaining a style. *Maintaining* sounds antithetical to being creative but I refer to maintenance of the craft.
I am thrilled that @snapcollectiveworld is publishing a book of my art!! It will be a compilation of paintings and drawings over the past 25+ years entitled ‘Murk and Communion’

Drawing Vy on Zoom while she was lying down was tricky — it challenged me to see thru my objective lens even more than usual. Drawing from life and/or *life* on Zoom will become more valuable for skill building as AI enters the cultural landscape and rattles the cages of our ancient art forms
