Our ExM Atlas of eukaryotes is moving along with more and more images coming in - some featured in nature last month!

Being at an international conference is kind of like leading a double life, rushing "home" to Zoom into lab meeting with the team. Anyways, we were nerding out about proteomics possibilities and mixotroph investment strategies today. #figaday 4.306/n #year4
@ambonacolta.bsky.social and I co-hosted (and gave talks in) a special symposium for @protistologyopen.bsky.social today. It was super fun to put this together, & glad all of these amazing scientists were able to join us!! @mixotrophe.bsky.social
ISOP-sponsored symposium on protistan symbioses across the Tree of Life went fantastic! Thanks all contributors (Ondrej, Gillian, and @mixotrophe.bsky.social) and the best co-host, @nicolecoots.bsky.social! #ProtistsOnSky @protistologyopen.bsky.social
Oh thanks so much! It took us a while to come up with that also, although knowing Amelie she probably had the idea simmering in her mind all along. And agreed, I'm constantly lifting plotting ideas from papers.
Transmission electron micrograph of Myrionecta rubra (= Mesodinium rubrum) taken in 2008 by an undergraduate.
Ultrastructure expansion microscopy image of Mesodinium rubrum (f.k.a. Myrionecta rubra) taken by a Ph.D. student in 2026.
I took the TEM image of Mesodinium (then: Myrionecta!) on the left in 2008, as an undergraduate. Today, one of our grad students took the image on the right using UExM. I love the parallels in the composition--and how science has progressed! So much more information with much less time! #unicornjob🦄
These fuckin chuds
Naming your biology LLM after Rosalind Franklin is… hell is not hot enough
What a handsome boy!!
Thanks for the enthusiasm Lilly!! It was a fun undergraduate project with remarkably straightforward results 🤩
I know late to the party and all but very excited to see this: support for the hypothesis that increased prey specificity correlates with more tightly integrated kleptoplasts – from @mixotrophe.bsky.social lab (wrong image associated with link)

Just completely insane levels of detail in our latest ultrastructure expansion -- #UExM -- imaging of #Ochromonas. Look at those *thylakoids* 😍 ((swoon)). Hypothesis Fund creativity, and Julian's exceptional lab hands, at work! #figaday 4.304/n #year4
The wetlab crew distracted themselves with crosswords while anxiously waiting out the e-power outage (lasted 20mins instead of the previous 10). Love this team. #figaday 4.303/n #year4
Idk what happened but half of #MeetCapone 's eyebrows have gone missing... Possibly a consequence of his super zoomies lately or, as he would like the world to know, the fact that absolutely no one has fed him ever since at least the self-domestication of cats but possibly the dawn of time.
Worth checking out the parasitized snail (image, and more info including a video, via Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leucoch...)
Your Tax Day reminder that trickle-down economics is a cruel hoax designed to enrich the wealthy and corporations while draining money for the middle class and the poor.
Don't let billionaires fool you into thinking we shouldn't tax the rich.
As an opinion editor, I fact-checked my writers. As an opinion journalist, I was fact-checked.
While editors shouldn't interfere with writers' opinions, we are certainly used to pressure-testing arguments and counter-arguments.
Good opinion journalism *should* be well-reported AND well-argued.
(Between you and me: 10 days is a tough application turnaround. We'll likely have multiple review dates, especially if we have a heads up that an application is incoming.)
🚨Job Alert!🚨 Please share widely! We are hiring *two* postdocs (one ASAP, one Oct '26) using models and data to identify pathways involving the gut-brain axis that link the infant microbiome with neurodevelopment and Autism Spectrum Disorder. 1st review date: April 24!

Snails! 🐌 Very fun problem led by Grace in modeling class today. Check out all the different handwriting because we got *everyone* to the board today! #figaday 4.301/n #year4

Close up with a beautiful nudibranch on a rocky reef. The lower half of the image is a palette of swatches made from the nudi's vibrant colours.
Once upon a time I just admired nudis and sea slugs.
But it was not enough. Now apparently I'm creating an R package to celebrate their colour palettes? 😅
First up, my Sydney fave, Hypselodoris bennetti.

The Selander Lab at Lund University, Sweden, is looking for a PhD student to study the ecology of fear in marine plankton. Exciting topic with great supervision!

Thanks! I'm pretty happy with the colour scheme :)
I consider spoiling good news for PI colleagues part of my moral rights 😅. But I do remind them to act surprised when their trainee gives them the news.
Congratulations Kaisa!!
