Don't assume this was a "scandal." Levirate and similar forms of marriage can be found in the Bible and in cultures thru out the world. Without knowing more details, this sounds like extended family coming together for very practical, nurturing, and supportive reasons. Nothing scandalous at all!

Had hoped to be Sec of Agriculture. Totally unqualified, but no felonies. No allegations of corruption, sexual harassment, misconduct, or alcohol/drug abuse, either, but as a teenager I did once have a thing for the girl on The Partridge Family and that should count for something …

A seminal moment at age 11 for me, I learned of MLK's assassination at a family celebration of my grandmother's birthday. The reaction of my white Missouri-born family was shocking and sad to witness but over the years gradually became more enlightened as the family confronted the issue of race.

Why engage with #genealogy, #OnePlaceStudies, or
#FamilyHistory? It's been said, “The truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off.” Sometimes truth hurts. But it’s still truth. We document our work so that we humbly know just what the hell we’re talking about. We get the receipts ...

How do we do #genealogy, #OnePlaceStudies, or #FamilyHistory? We tell stories, that's how.

Anyone who knows me, knows I love to share stories. Hopefully, they’re not the same ones told over and over.

Stories set context and that is how we remember.

“Why waste your time looking up your family tree?” Mark Twain once asked. “Just go into politics and your opponents will do it for you.”

Most folks don’t go into politics. That’s where #genealogy, #OnePlaceStudies, and #FamilyHistory comes in. It’s for the politics of it all ...

Why engage #genealogy, #OnePlaceStudies, or
#FamilyHistory? Between shared stories of our past and the realities of today's world, we must continually remind ourselves that our children, and our children’s children, will be looking back, judging how we lived our lives. It’s for who comes next ...

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King at March on Washington, 1963

Why engage with #genealogy, #OnePlaceStudies, or #FamilyHistory? As Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., one who played a prominent role in my family history, once observed:
“We are not makers of history. We are made by history.” It’s who we are ...
