Bit too soon to say! Institutionally we've been encouraged to embrace AI for some time, but it's only been implemented in my School policy from this semester (started this week!).

We have no in-person exams, and now allow some permitted use of AI in nearly all our assessments.

That sounds like a really interesting approach! I'd love to hear how it goes

Fun fact: #TaylorSwift sings 'You dug me out of my grave and saved my heart from the fate of Ophelia' 🎵 Lizzie Siddal, the model who posed for Ophelia by Millais actually was dug out of her grave 7 years after she was buried cos her husband Rossetti wanted some poems back he'd buried with her.

A useful reminder to permanent academic staff. Many of you may have temporary staff joining your departments soon. It's nice to at least pretend to think they are people - why not learn their names and their field of interest, to develop this basic level of polite collegiality?

New generation of educationalist vice-chancellors urges change As more vice-chancellors across the UK emerge from educational backgrounds, rather than academic ones, they argue that academic bias and hierarchies need to be dismantled

There's an alternative model to improve senior management that would not require VCs to come from educationalist backgrounds: expect them to teach and administer one module per term per annum. Much needless expenditure & poor policy derives from senior managers' distance from students & classrooms.

Staff are working dangerously long hours, and their employers should be concerned Alastair Smith argues that widespread expectations that people work long hours in higher education may be in conflict with UK working time regulations

'From my perspective, if university employees are consistently working more than 48 hours a week, their employers are potentially violating key UK Health and Safety (H&S) requirements. Workload management isn’t just a matter of institutional efficacy and well-being—it’s a pressing legal issue.'

Working in pre-decimal currency can be a pain, so I’ve put together an Excel document that makes it a lot easier. If you need a calculator that works with pounds, shillings and pence, you are welcome to download and use this chartist-ancestors.blogspot.com/2023/07/need...

If you go to the top right corner of your home screen there is a settings box which allows you to pin particular feeds to your screen. You can also search for them. There is one for #18c for instance and one for #histsci. And a general history one that uses the 🗃 emoji.
