It is a truth universally acknowledged, that in order to fully enjoy Banna beach at low tide on a sunny day, one must be in the company of a dog with a ball.

The application has remained stable since approximately 9 PM PDT, April 16 despite ongoing Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks. We have not seen any evidence of unauthorized access to private user data. We will provide a further update by end of day.
As I recall, that study gave a 2% chance of a 2025 tipping point, with the most likely scenario somewhere around 2060-70. Which is not too far off this study.
This is one long, multi-decadal event that's hard to measure or predict with precision.
But we do know it's caused by burning fossil fuels.
And while all this is going on, we'll be a lot dumber. AI makes us much, much dumber. The first AI cohort graduating from universities around the world will be the dumbest ever. Politicians will be dumber; voters will be dumber; organisations will be dumber; media will be dumber.
There's that too.
Something has to change. And yet it does not. This can't go on any longer. And yet it does. We just can't take it any more - and yet we suffer what we must.
We have been told, sold and brought up within a fast and greedy lie that is crumbling. Change is coming, whether we like it or not.
There's only so much people can take as pressure increases and their world disintegrates while comfortable power seeks only to continue the status quo. A tipping point is passed, a spark ignites a protest or riot, a decent person is radicalised by haters and grifters feeding on ignorance and fear.
Because the sad fact is that this fast, competitive and suicidal lifestyle that we cling to does not make us happy or secure. Its destroying us, our families and our communities as well as the natural world and the future. Its product is depression, anxiety, anger, loneliness and incessant stress.
A great article - thank you!
However, perhaps the fuel protests were not primarily about carbon tax - and in fact not really about fossil fuel prices at all? Perhaps the price increases were just the last straw releasing tensions from daily stress and bleakness that has become intolerable.
“The Irish government balked at introducing any such moderate, sensible energy-saving measures, presumably fearful of backlash from a public conditioned to believe that any sacrifice, no matter how small, is intolerable”.
My take is in @thejournal.ie today.

Hey @bsky.app - have you tried turning it off and on again?

BREAKING: Police unlawfully arrest Elizabeth Morley, aged 80, under the Terrorism Act.
Whilst being taken away for peacefully holding a sign in support of Palestine Action, she says the mass arrests are a "very stupid thing to do".

In Turkey, an elderly man who earns his living by shining shoes is visited every morning at the same time by a cat that asks to have its fur brushed. The man never turns down this little friend.😍👍💙
Tonight in Budapest’s Heroes’ Square, a sea of young Hungarians—who’ve only ever known Orbán’s corrupt, suffocating regime—are packed together, singing, chanting, and daring to dream of freedom again.
Their hope is raw, their courage is real. The heart of Europe is beating in Budapest tonight. 🇭🇺❤️🇪🇺
This black-and-white portrait of Frances Perkins captures her in a dignified, close-up pose. She is wearing a dark, structured tricorn-style hat and a coat with a voluminous, dark fur collar that frames her face. A small white bow or decorative element is visible at her neckline. Her expression is calm and composed, with a slight, thoughtful smile as she looks directly at the camera. The background is a soft, neutral grey, keeping the focus entirely on her.
Frances Perkins was a principal architect of the New Deal.
As FDR’s Secretary of Labor (1933–1945) & the first woman to serve in a US cabinet, she was one of the most important figures shaping the New Deal’s landmark labor & social welfare programs.
She was born #OTD in 1880. (1/2)

No one should actually do this, but imagine if climate activists blocked the pathway of these trucks, so that the police would then have to come and arrest / jail / fine all the climate people so that the trucks could go back to blocking traffic for everyone else

It is. GenAI is a 'meta-industry - and we've had lots of these: electricity, oil, telecommunications, the internet, etc. The result isn't just one product or service - its a whole myriad of new industries, products, services and use cases. Mostly spammy, mediocre and annoying, I would imagine.
I forget who said that women should always be in charge of war, because men get too emotional about it, but somehow it’s been coming to mind recently.
I grew up in an atheist, science-focused family but (being in Ireland) attended religious schools. Not only did I never feel excluded or discriminated against, but I gained important values and a better understanding of and solidarity with others. The magic stories are just one part of it.
Non-experts are dubious too. 🤦

Line chart showing atmospheric CO₂ concentration at Mauna Loa Observatory from 1958 to 2024. A light blue sawtooth line shows raw monthly values, reflecting the seasonal cycle of plant growth. A dark blue smooth line shows the seasonally adjusted record, rising from 315 ppm in 1958 to over 426 ppm in 2024. A dashed red curve shows the super-exponential fit, with the instantaneous growth rate rising from 0.27%/yr in 1960 to 0.64%/yr in 2024, more than doubling over the period of the record.
1/ Why is atmospheric CO₂ accelerating faster than fossil fuel emissions are growing?
The answer is buried in the data, and it's more worrying than most people realise.
A thread. 🧵👇
While optimistic noises may be made about our progress in limiting emissions, the underlying problem is not being tackled by effective policy measures.
While our EU partners have achieved average emission reductions of 40% since 1990, we have managed a measly 5%.

Imagine spending your entire life in a bare, crowded cage - never seeing the sky; never feeling the wind; never touching the earth with your feet.
To call these industrial horror factories 'farms' is an insult to decent farmers everywhere.

There's been a bit of inflation since then. Inflation-adjusted, it'd have to hit around $140 to match the 2022 spike.
(Of course, that was just a spike. This will be much longer.)
