Dudes. As a society we taught young women to walk with keys between their fingers in dark parking lots and to carry pepper spray in their purse.

So yes. I’m asking you to be responsible for the actions of other men. After all, that’s what you’ve asked of women for centuries.

It’s your turn.

From Pilgrims by Devin Kelly

I'm sorry, he said. It's hard.

I know it's hard, I said.

Are you going to quote the Bible at me, he said.

When have I ever quoted the Bible at you?

I wondered about his choice of that little word: at. Little sharp thing it was. It sounded like cat. Or scat. Even attack. It sounded violent. And I wondered: do I come across as violent? To anyone?
To my father? Strange-that such a tiny word could be so barbed. Though even a stab wound is just a little slit in the skin.

I Confess - Allison Luterman

I stalked her
in the grocery store: her crown
of snowy braids held in place by a great silver clip, her erect bearing, radiating tenderness, watching
the way she placed yogurt and avocados in her basket,
beaming peace like the North Star.
I wanted to ask, "What aisle did you find your serenity in, do you know
how to be married for fifty years or how to live alone,
excuse me for interrupting, but you seem to possess
some knowledge that makes the earth turn and burn on its axis-"
But we don't request such things from strangers nowadays. So I said, "I love your hair."

a walking path with a thin green-grass median in the middle is surrounded on either side with beds of thick, green ferns and younger trees, the canopy casting light and shade across the ferns and the path. The sky above is muted blue but the sun is very bright, creating contrast between the dark shadows and the bright patches of sunshine.
