Japanese uses it for anything that takes you over. 勉強漬け (benkyō-zuke): soaked in studying. 仕事漬け (shigoto-zuke): soaked in work. ドラマ漬け (dorama-zuke): soaked in dramas. The word is rarely neutral. It usually carries a small shrug of self-deprecation: other things have stopped, and you know it.

Wie Japans leert op het niveau waarop je een document als de 後発地震注意情報 zelf kunt lezen, kan de drie klikken overslaan. Het alarmisme lost op in data. Je zus belt niet in paniek, maar met een intelligente vraag. Dat is wat wij bij Japanology onderwijzen.

"Tsunami off Sanriku coast" wordt "Tsunami threat in Japan". "Aardbeving in de Sanriku-zee" wordt "Aardbeving doet Tokio op zijn grondvesten schudden". En dan wordt er in paniek gebeld naar iemand die op dat moment rustig een kopje thee drinkt.

Geen "Japan in gevaar"-frames. Geen speculatieve sensatiekoppen. Dat is niet omdat Japan de situatie bagatelliseert. Dat is omdat men weet dat paniek bij echte rampen meer slachtoffers maakt dan het geofysische feit zelf. Het westerse format doet het omgekeerde.

Geen verplichte evacuatie, alleen paraatheid. Zo bericht Japan over een ramp, ook op tv. NHK geeft de exacte diepte, de golfhoogtes per kustplaats, de tekst van de waarschuwing, de procentuele kansverdeling. Scherp waar nodig, maar bovenal feitelijk en wetenschappelijk.

Om 19:30 Japanse tijd riep het JMA bovendien de 北海道・三陸沖後発地震注意情報 uit: een adviessysteem dat pas sinds december 2022 bestaat en vandaag voor de tweede keer is geactiveerd.

Dit is geen incident. Dit is het systeem. Magnitude rond de 7,5, epicentrum in de Sanriku-zee op circa 10 km diepte, maximale schokintensiteit 5強 (5-sterk op een schaal die tot 7 loopt).

Hoge gebouwen in de hoofdstad voelden wel langdurig een trilling, maar dat is bij verre zware bevingen een heel normaal fysisch verschijnsel, geen reden tot paniek. Wie de Japanse bronnen las, wist dit binnen vijf minuten. Wie afhankelijk was van de Nederlandse samenvatting, belde in paniek.

De hoogste tsunami die het Japanse meteorologisch instituut (JMA) mat, was 80 cm in Kuji, aan de kust van Iwate. Rond Tokio: geen tsunami-waarschuwing.

Vandaag kreeg een van onze leerlingen een paniekerige boodschap van zijn zus. Ze had op de Nederlandse radio gehoord dat Tokio in gevaar was. Tokio ligt op zo'n 600 kilometer van het epicentrum van de aardbeving die vandaag Noordoost-Japan trof.
