I have holes of light flooding my body. When Father asked me in which direction we should proceed, I said let’s head to the sassafras trees at the South Shore Point. When mother said to me, Oh look, the rose in the glass by the window is dying, I held my hand out and gave her another one. I spit the skin of the milk from the glass into the fireplace. Mother played Chopin on the black and white keys of her beige piano. Every baby born on New Year’s after midnight is photographed. I remember you said, you were one of them. That was many years ago. They lined three babies up in front of a birthday cake. You kept the photograph that appeared in the New Year’s day edition of the daily newspaper, and kept it between dictionary pages like one would an autumn leaf. Father said, A fool can make a joke out of their own person. I was never completely sure what he meant. Rose stems, thorns on a plant that never bloomed. Standing still by snow-covered ledges, tiny crowns, the webbed feet of crows, drawing in graphite on a folio, exploring haptic lines, a cluster of melodies, a cartography of memories.

Entanglements - a poem by Karl Tierney

Because I cannot point to some little Gibralter
and say "That's the one!"
like Queen Victoria shopping,
I've let myself be the one who's picked.
So when the last one came along, a veritable fan,
those tin wrists and acne scars paled in comparison
to a flat ass and ears that don't match.
But both with broad shoulders, boy of boy
could we argue like men
and cut the mustard without the dreadful shame
everyone's incessantly discussing these days
on TV, in congregations, meetings of all sorts.
To make a not-so-long-story even shorter,
I got committed for life --
his,
and then with no money left --
mine,
declared emotional bankruptcy --
a preemptive strike at the next one.
- July 28, 1991

POEM FOR MY GRANDMOTHER
walking through swirling snowstorm
face of my dead grandmother in the wind
sitting in rented split/level house
(upstairs the barking of a dog, outside
 the sound of Halifax traffic)
On the television, Charlie Chaplin
tumbling down stairs
rising with a smile of human
dignity
shelves decorated w/holiday ribbons
certain things of life brought
from Pogrom village Russia
If she had stayed to witness October
her breath rushing off to Spain
her eyes bright like
the sparks of metal on wheels
colliding
Our life here, a constant
struggle to maintain, the
doors of our house, open
When she died, the relatives
divided her belongings, I pass
through an alley, hear the
sound of a boat in the harbour
at the dock her hair swirls
in a laborer's coat
(c) Robert Frede Kenter
