Day 5 of the #WombwellRainbow Ekphrastic Challenge 2026.
A self portrait.
You see who I am vs. how I see who I am.
Inspired by the album title 나는 나를 통해 우리를 보는 너를 통해 나를 본다 (I see myself through you who see us through me) by Madmans Esprit.

We cannot know his legendary head with eyes like ripening fruit. And yet his torso is still suffused with brilliance from inside, like a lamp, in which his gaze, now turned to low, gleams in all its power. Otherwise the curved breast could not dazzle you so, nor could a smile run through the placid hips and thighs to that dark center where procreation flared. Otherwise this stone would seem defaced beneath the translucent cascade of the shoulders and would not glisten like a wild beast's fur: would not, from all the borders of itself, burst like a star: for here there is no place that does not see you. You must change your life
Today’s poem for #NationalPoetryMonth

Here is today's piece, check out the other responses (and the artwork that inspired them) here
A poem called Snowy Beach and the photo that inspired it. When a devil goes on holiday they seek the best that earth can be: cool water, sand between their hooves, the crisp shiver of snow blowing into heaps; empty houses, empty roads, restaurants with no more chefs chalk menus outside all October running in the rain. But most of all no-one screaming for ice-cream. Here in winter Cleethorpes, it is. An innovative business model— If we could but shame a devil into paying Instead of promising then fading to invisibility as they walk the pier then takes the air—to leave it colder.
My first poem for April #Ekphrastic #NoPoWriMo organised by @thewombwellrainbow.bsky.social I have included the photo by GHP.

This was my piece for the 1st
The picture of the pier reminded me of a place I used to often visit with my gran when I was younger.

In the leaves,
In the trunks,
In the petals,

Artwork part of New Year’s Eve, A Graphite Apartment by Robert Frede Kenter published in the journal THE PROSE POEM, for March 2026 (part of an ekphrastic project) where writers work from their own artwork. A row of houses (late 19th century).'Graphite Apartment,' photo-based collage with hand painted elements, Autumn 2024. robert frede kenter (c).
I have holes of light flooding my body. When Father asked me in which direction we should proceed, I said let’s head to the sassafras trees at the South Shore Point. When mother said to me, Oh look, the rose in the glass by the window is dying, I held my hand out and gave her another one. I spit the skin of the milk from the glass into the fireplace. Mother played Chopin on the black and white keys of her beige piano. Every baby born on New Year’s after midnight is photographed. I remember you said, you were one of them. That was many years ago. They lined three babies up in front of a birthday cake. You kept the photograph that appeared in the New Year’s day edition of the daily newspaper, and kept it between dictionary pages like one would an autumn leaf. Father said, A fool can make a joke out of their own person. I was never completely sure what he meant. Rose stems, thorns on a plant that never bloomed. Standing still by snow-covered ledges, tiny crowns, the webbed feet of crows, drawing in graphite on a folio, exploring haptic lines, a cluster of melodies, a cartography of memories.
"New Year’s Eve, A Graphite Apartment." by Robert Frede Kenter.

‘I try to sit still. I imagine my own hand at oil painting, curves of his face, the sfumato of sunlight through glass.’

I had to try it on my own
Reanimating jackalopes
Stitching antlers to bone
Was pinned upon my hopes
...
Experiment was a great success
Incantation fused two souls
In a hybrid form nature detests
Yet magick shapes & molds

After a brilliant display
Locals call 'phoenix rising'
A star will crunch today
Which is not surprising
Yet it will not go away
Which is undermining
Our new solar array
So back to redesigning

'We see the middle-aged man
carrying a hat, smoking a pipe,
because Graham inhabits him.
All artists are obsessives:
these giant light boxes,
demanding our devotion.'

I find it entertaining
You think a sense of order
Can easily contain me
Yet when your plans fail
Or maintenance falls through
Right before you know it
I'm stalking just behind you

An artist moved, no goal in mind
For every drip or stroke of brush
Creates anew, so what they find
Born from errant clouds of paint
Is patience given, rewarding time
Spent immersed in chromatic flush
Or embedded in clever rhyme
As the lioness of fortune's fate
Arrives
