One of the biggest threats to bats in North America is white-nose syndrome, a deadly fungal disease that is spreading at an alarming rate. 

Together with partners, we’re trialing an innovative treatment (1/2)

We re-initiate efforts this May! With treatment and control sites across Alberta - we will be capturing bats, monitoring bat health & applying probiotic to roosting surfaces. Early results from BC has shown that it improves survival rates for bats. Lots of questions remain though! #ProbioticProject

Creatives at the city of Calgary made a set of "weighted" bats with representative wingspans of our nine AB species. They were also giving away wildflower seeds to promote native plantings in city gardens! Remember to be careful with seed mixes to make sure you only have native plants & no invasives!

The University of Calgary helped the city out with a collection of pinned moths to help illustrate what bats eat. A beautiful set of moths - but they do need to add some beetles, flies and mosquitoes to the mix! Any night-flying insect is a potential snack for a bat!

The bat folks at the city created a fun little sorting game - who migrates and who hibernates? Can you guess?

Fun with a light box! The city set up images comparing a bat wing and a human hand. They are the same! Just longer fingers and maybe a few fused metacarpals - but a bat wing is essentially a mammalian hand. The order for bats is Chiroptera which literally means "hand wing".
