In a new study, we found that one in ten US adults have overlapping risky alcohol use and obesity with implications for the use of GLP-1’s to mitigate these liver disease risk factors 👇
Congrats!
Check out our new editorial for the latest on evidence for GLP-1’s for the treatment on alcohol use disorder
In our national study of hospitalizations from 2016-2022, we describe overall stable rates of alcohol-related hospitalizations but increasing inpatient mortality, length of stay, patient complexity, and cost. Just published in @jamanetworkopen.com👇
🚨Our new paper in @jhospmedicine.bsky.social describes large hospital-level variation in initiation of medications for alcohol use disorder during alcohol withdrawal hospitalizations. Huge opportunity for increasing uptake of evidence based treatment! @cudivhospmed.bsky.social
Nearly one in 10 people with substance use disorders are hospitalized in a year, yet disorder treatment often isn’t available, says a new study by @cudeptofmedicine.bsky.social faculty @edenbernstein.bsky.social, Gina Kruse, MD, and Susan Calcaterra, MD, MPH. @cuanschutz.bsky.social #cucityofhealth
Bottom line: Both are great (and underutilized!) options to initiate for AUD at hospital discharge. As with everything, would heavily consider local factors and patient preferences in decision-making, but if adherence to pills is a barrier then injectable naltrexone might be a good choice
Both strategies resulted in post-hospitalization reduction in drinking. While there was no significant difference in drinking outcomes btw groups, adherence was better in the injectable arm.

Unfortunately, most hospitalized patients with substance use disorders don't receive evidence-based treatment. These findings highlight that this is a missed opportunity to help millions of people each year ‼️
Those who were hospitalized were unsurprisingly older and had more medical and psychiatric co-morbidities compared to those who weren't.
However, given the underlying prevalence of substance use disorders, tobacco and alcohol use disorders accounted for the largest overall prevalence of hospitalizations.
Hospitalizations were common! 10% of adults with SUD reported past-year hospitalizations including nearly 1 in 4 of those with opioid use disorder.
We used a national survey (NSDUH) to identify US adults with substance use disorders in 2022 and describe their self-reported prevalence of past-year hospitalizations.
Hospitalizations present unmet opportunities for addiction treatment engagement. Our new paper in @annalsofim.bsky.social describes the prevalence of hospitalizations among adults with substance use disorders to inform the reach of hospital-based addiction treatment programs🧵

1. Today the NIH director issued a new directive slashing overhead rates to 15%.
I want to provide some context on what that means and why it matters.

Texas GA-46 threatens confidentiality and trust between clinicians and immigrants. We must advocate to protect privacy and ensure hospitals remain safe spaces.
Great to chat with @markharden.bsky.social about the link between alcohol and cancer in light of the recent surgeon general advisory!
