"Your translations to our languages is really impressive," the linguist said. "Are there any particular concepts that are extra hard?"
"Normal," the alien envoy said.
"That's very culturally dependent."
"Yes, but there is also a vast difference between our observations and your perceptions."

84% of Americans support the Endangered Species Act - so why are Members of Congress bowing to the minority of special interest groups to destroy it?

American values are under attack. H.R. 1897 is scheduled to be voted on by the end of tomorrow. The ESA has saved 99% of listed species from extinction, but if H.R. 1897 passes, your favorite animals could be gone forever.
📣Urge your Reps to vote NO on this un-American bill: https://bit.ly/4tlqJZh

Today is Gimlis 🐈 pre-surgical appointment at the vet for his dental appointment next week... we waited two months for that and I know he's hurting at least every once in a while. So glad this will finally be over soon.

"My son always texts to say he's on his way home. So I open the door, letting his 17 year old cat, and 16 year old doggo know that he's on his way. This is them waiting for him. Though it was adorable, and wanted to share." ❤️

Just a thought: How about we stop shaming the poor for buying things that may not be essential, and start shaming the rich for making a profit off things that are essential?

after I cleaned it out earlier. I'm going to check her face tomorrow again, probably bother her with more q-tips and then prepare her terrarium, so she can move back in afterwards or in a few days.
I'm tired.

Also successfully cleaned the snakes face.. I've never done that and she was the calmes bestest snake ever. Letting me put q-tips soaked with antibacterial spray all over her face and mouth.
Then after relaxing in my hoodie she's currently in her 'travel'box, so the terrarium can dry properly..

There is actually a not so small chance that this was the last time I saw him... and I was putting the poor guy in a box and didn't even say goodbye... I'm so sorry buddy.

I've had a hard day today...
just brought the neighbor's cat from the box in my garage, that he didn't leave all day, to his owners, so they can bring him to the vet. He's 16 years old and now I'm sitting here, tears in my eyes because I forgot to say "Bye bye, buddy" when I dropped him off..

Vintage black-and-white photograph of Rose Marie McCoy, the acclaimed songwriter known for hits recorded by artists like Elvis Presley and Nat King Cole. She is joyfully smiling with bright eyes and open mouth, positioned close to a large classic studio microphone. She wears oversized round over-ear headphones covering her ears, dangling statement earrings, and a textured blazer or suit jacket. Her short, voluminous curly hair frames her face. The image captures her in a recording session, with soft studio lighting and a blurred dark background.
Songwriter Rose Marie McCoy was born #OTD in 1922.
She published >800 songs--songs recorded by many artists including James Brown, Nat King Cole, Aretha Franklin, Elvis, and Ike & Tina Turner. 😮

I would've really needed that restorative yoga class at the studio today... but driving 50 minutes around a construction site to even get to the studio for a 60 minute class... stresses me more than yoga could relax me 😞
So, rolling out my mat at home again. YT is teaching today.

A historic black-and-white photograph from Gertrude Caton Thompson's 1920s excavations in the Faiyum Depression, Egypt, captures her field crew carefully excavating a remarkably preserved Neolithic basket lining from a storage pit. In the foreground, several Egyptian workers—dressed in traditional light-colored robes, turbans or headscarves, and simple attire suited to the desert heat—kneel or crouch around a shallow, rectangular pit dug into the sandy, barren ground. One worker in the center leans in closely, gently brushing or handling the large, coiled basket structure (made of woven straw or plant fibers) that fills much of the pit, its dark, textured form contrasting with the surrounding pale soil and rocks. Nearby, another worker supports or examines the basket's edge, while others stand or observe attentively, one with a hand to his face in thought. The vast, flat desert landscape stretches endlessly behind them under a clear sky, emphasizing the remote, arid setting north of ancient Lake Qarun where Caton-Thompson and geologist Elinor Wight Gardner uncovered key evidence of early farming communities, including these basket-lined silos containing domesticated wheat and barley from around 5000–4500 BCE. The image highlights the meticulous, hands-on nature of early 20th-century archaeology and Caton Thompson's pioneering stratigraphic methods in defining the Fayum Neolithic culture.
I learned of Thompson through her work in the Faiyum Depression in Egypt (1924–28). She & geologist Elinor Wight Gardner conducted the first systematic survey of the depression & discovered Egypt’s earliest known Neolithic farming culture, dating back to approximately 4000–5000 BCE. #archaeology 2/2

Gertrude Caton Thompson (1888–1985), the pioneering English archaeologist and Fellow of the British Academy renowned for her groundbreaking work in Egyptian prehistory (including distinguishing Neolithic cultures in the Faiyum depression) and her 1928–1929 stratigraphic excavations at Great Zimbabwe—which conclusively proved the site's medieval African origins, debunking racist colonial myths attributing it to Phoenicians or other non-African builders—poses in a classic black-and-white studio portrait from her mid-career years. The composed woman gazes directly at the camera with a calm, intelligent expression, her dark hair neatly styled in soft waves typical of the 1920s–1930s. She wears a light-colored blouse or dress with intricate embroidered zigzag and floral patterns along the neckline and shoulders. The soft, neutral dark background and subtle lighting highlight her dignified features and the fine details of her attire, capturing the determined spirit of a trailblazing scholar who advanced rigorous, evidence-based archaeology in male-dominated fields and challenging political contexts.
Archaeologist Gertrude Caton Thompson led the first all-female archaeological expedition in history in 1929.
She was one of the first in the field to use aerial surveys to identify sites, using them successfully for her famed work in Zimbabwe & Egypt. She died #OTD in 1985.
