What Is Palantir? An FAQ. The Peter Thiel–founded, ‘Lord of the Rings’–inspired company has a massive government presence and is seemingly always at the center of controversy. So, uh … why does hardly anyone know what it does?

For anyone who's waking up to this Palantir statement, I wrote a guide to the company and the fatuous chauvinism of its "defend the West" cosplay ideology a few weeks ago

Because we get asked a lot.

The Technological Republic, in brief.

1. Silicon Valley owes a moral debt to the country that made its rise possible. The engineering elite of Silicon Valley has an affirmative obligation to participate in the defense of the nation.

2. We must rebel against the tyranny of the apps. Is the iPhone our greatest creative if not crowning achievement as a civilization? The object has changed our lives, but it may also now be limiting and constraining our sense of the possible.

3. Free email is not enough. The decadence of a culture or civilization, and indeed its ruling class, will be forgiven only if that culture is capable of delivering economic growth and security for the public.

4. The limits of soft power, of soaring rhetoric alone, have been exposed. The ability of free and democratic societies to prevail requires something more than moral appeal. It requires hard power, and hard power in this century will be built on software.

Palantir put out a 22-point summary of their CEO's book The Technological Republic. It's pitched as a defence of the West, but if you read it through the VDA framework, verification, deliberation, accountability, what it's actually doing looks rather different.

Happy 45th birthday to Pocket Calculator by Kraftwerk, released as a single on this day in 1981. Watch more of this concert, filmed for Austrian TV in 1982, at youtu.be/B55znMACT8I

This is genuinely messed up. And this guy owns The Sphere, too? Makes me second-guess my desire to attend a concert there…

I personally haven’t pulled out “Empathy Box” in quite a while. Can’t go wrong there.

Why are we bringing autism into this? There’s a lot of ways to make fun of this band (I like them, but that’s just me) without saying anything like that about their fans.

Absolutely vile: Trump just said on Fox that the threat to obliterate Iranian civilization was a good thing, because "it brought them to the table."

We have to take this on frontally and directly. It's a lie, and the underlying idea it's premised on is even worse:

Fair enough. I’m sorry that happened to you. My guess is that staff at bigger corporate venues like Xfinity Center have little-to-no discretion in how they enforce policy compared to smaller places.

1 week ago 2 0 0 0

Your issue was that you wanted to change to an empty ADA seat after the show had started. I agree that a little compassion would have gone a long way there. Is that something other venues allow?

1 week ago 2 0 1 0

OK, that is not at all what I thought they were being accused of. I thought they were being accused of gouging people who needed ADA seats by upcharging those tickets. But they’re not doing that.

1 week ago 2 0 1 0

If they’re not more expensive than similar seats, then I don’t think I understand the issue. What’s the bad behavior here?

(The limited/scalper thing I could understand, sure, but that’s not completely in the purview of the venue, though I suppose they could prohibit resale of those seats.)

1 week ago 2 0 1 0

I agree, it is. I just can’t find an example of them actually doing it.

1 week ago 1 0 0 0

Sure about that? I just looked at the wheelchair seat prices for two random shows at Xfinity (Evanescence and TLC) and in neither case were those tickets more expensive than standard-priced tickets nearby.

I’m fortunate to not need those, so I’ve never checked, but that would be illegal, I would think.

I guess I’m tone-deaf - I don’t feel like I’ve had a bad sonic experience at MGM Fenway. If I had to pick, Paradise would be my “most likely to have an off night” venue. Maybe HOB sometimes. But MGM is up there w/Roadrunner, Middle East Downstairs and Sinclair as the most consistently good IMHO.

Reddit - The heart of the internet A promo piece a friend of mine gave me, it's a can with flower seeds but I've always kept it on my shelf. Front and back pics:

It was called “Meadow In A Can,” apparently. I’ve only ever seen one of them, back when the album first came out. www.reddit.com/r/rem/commen...

Corruption IS an impeachable offense! Surfacing it during an impeachment trial WILL draw focus to it. How hard is this?!

The one that started it all. 40 years ago this month, my parents drove me to Lechmere in Dedham, MA, and I paid $11.99 + tax for this, the very first CD I bought for myself, using some birthday money. 4 decades and over 10,000 CDs later, I still find magic in those musical pits and lands. #CDFriday
