Emphasis on meaningfulness and sense-making as central to mathematical development. Memorization is fragile and recovery is difficult (as in forgot my password or lock cutter at my gym for forgotten combinations) but reasoning from basic meaning back to some fact is possible.

Review Subtraction strategies with my new video.
Challenge your students to identify the strategies shown and to justify their choice.
It makes for a powerful Review Routine - and builds their reasoning skills.

Absolutely yes. I see this everyday as a Maths Teacher & Coach.
In the third video in the series, we focus on being efficient with addition and subtraction.
Students are shown an inefficient strategy and must improve on it.
Next, they're shown two strategies, which is more efficient and why?

Exploration + clear explanations = deep learning
Inquiry-based learning builds problem-solving skills, while explicit instruction gives students the vocab, concepts, and procedures they need. “Students benefit most when the two go hand in hand,” says Smith.

Why ten-frames work: They build System 1 visual patterns (automatic recognition) that support System 2 reasoning (flexible thinking about 5+3, 4+4, etc.). Dual processing in action! #iteachmath #edusky #mtbos
Really worthwhile Reflection Questions for Maths.
Students in a classroom facing and writing on a whiteboard on the wall.
Building status in the classroom is not a quick fix. It takes time, but the results are worth the effort.
