The sheer volume of useless yet over-confident men I have encountered in positions of power in the corporate world has turned me into a very cynical and sceptical employee. It makes me very good at my actual job (in-house legal) but seems to be very bad for my career.

I've always worked under the assumption that most male professional athletes in NZ are right wing, to the extent that they think about or interact with politics at all. Even then, the Taine Randell news is a disappointment.

Using "woke" to describe a decision about civil defence is, objectively, the act of a moron. Whether or not the response was an overreaction is a separate question although I am not sure why the mayor of a town that was underwater less than 2 years ago wouldn't err on the side of caution.

Especially when you consider the recent history with flooding and storms in the area. It's less than 2 years since the Wairoa River burst its banks FFS.

I also hate the misuse of "woke" - co-opted by conservatives as a catch-all perjorative for everything they disagree with so it loses all meaning. Civil defence has nothing to do with social issues. He can just call it an overreaction. He'd still be wrong but he'd sound like less of a dickhead.

Hawke’s Bay mayor says he refused state of emergency for Cyclone Vaianu, calls response ‘woke’ While other local mayors declared states of emergency, Wairoa's said "there was a lot of panicking going on" over not a lot.

Imagine being this stupid. www.rnz.co.nz/news/ldr/592...

The government is busy telling everyone about fuel shipments headed to NZ.

I want to know about shipments of EVs, eBikes, eBuses, trains, and solar panels, so we don't need to worry about that other shit anymore.

Not a single mention of public transport. Incredible.

National could cover public transport fares rather than just subsidising people to buy petrol. They could invest in renewable energy generation in NZ instead of an overpriced LNG terminal. They won't because propping up the fossil fuel industry is the whole point. #NZPol

Another parent-teacher interview last night and the common theme is our amazing teachers - and they are absolutely amazing - are totally overwhelmed by constant, sudden changes in curriculum while still trying to help kids catch up from the (absolutely necessary) disruptions during lockdown.

I am a grudging, occasional user of AI given its carbon footprint, unreliability and impact on real people. However, when I do use it I say please and thank you because I grew up on Terminator 2 and The Matrix and would rather be a glorified pet than liquified and fed to the other meat batteries.

Workers who fall for ‘corporate bullshit’ may be worse at their jobs, study finds New study finds that employees impressed by corporate speak may be least equipped to make effective decisions

I mean nice to have it empirically tested and confirmed but we also always knew this.

Ignorance and arrogance seem to be both one of the most common and one of the most dangerous combinations of personality traits in those who seek out positions of power.

BVV really had the fucking nerve to describe her years of gaslighting, conspiring with her own oppressors and fawning subservience to the whims of private capital as "public service". Pathetic.

It's teacher-only day at our local primary school and I know how tough those can be for working parents. Fortunately, my neighbour has invited over, by my estimation based on the noise levels while trying to work, 30-50 children for an all-day screaming contest. #ittakesavillage #screams #feral
