Hummingbird with coppery gorget, rusty feathers over most of his body and patches of iridescent green on his back & crown. He is perched atop a blooming bush. The background is blurry tans.

The supposed "Mail-in Ballot Drop" was simply Fairfax County (Virginia's most populous county) reporting its results later than the small less-populated rural counties that reported their results earlier. Everyone knows Fairfax County is a Dem stronghold, so seriously nothing suspicious about it.
What exactly is your beef with Spanberger? Saw her last night and she seemed well satisfied with the result. And what's with the CIA reference? I live in Virginia and there's a shitload of misogynist crap directed at her and I'm sick of it.
The simple and perverse answer is this: #Trump does not want the talks to succeed. He is moody, vindictive, and irrational. He is sending pseudo-negotiators who have no authority (or skill) to engage in serious negotiation, because that would require compromise. #USApol
A great horned owl perched on a horizontal branch facing the viewer. The owl has large upright fuzzy ears from which it gets the 'horned' part of its name.
This city & suburb guy never saw an owl in the wild until today. Even as an amateur wildlife photographer I'm just not out early mornings or late evening when owls are most active. Glad that this great horned owl has a nest at my favorite site in Alexandria, Virginia, USA. 20-APR-2026. #birds
Two cedar waxwings flying over large rocks. The birds are brown with gray wings, a yellow belly, and a black mask across the face. The rocks in the background range in color from brown to orange.

You are very welcome! If I'm not mistaken, you were the one who first told me where to look across the river to find the right tree, so you get partial credit for this photo!
Thanks.
Three large stick nests are shown in a very large tree against a pale blue sky. The tree bark is white on the main trunks and there is just the beginning of buds showing on the small tree in this early Spring photo. One adult great blue heron is perched atop one of the nests.
Like many birds, great blue herons are tending their nests, watching over the little nestlings or laying eggs. This large tree had at least seven nests that I could see in this heronry, or heron rookery. I zoomed in on 3 to show the lone adult sentinel. Sterling, Virginia, USA 7-Apr-2026 #birds
Are 'forecourts' what we in the USA call 'gas stations', i.e. places where people go to refuel their gas (petrol) vehicles? I
A northern mockingbird poses in the morning sun on a thin bare branch with a lush green tree behind it.
A northern mockingbird if I'm not mistaken. These birds seem much less skittish than others allowing for closer approaches. They also tend to perch on lower branches (unlike those *":*&^!#@$# warblers) allowing for a nearly eye-level shot. Sterling, Virginia, USA 7-APR-2026. #birds
A male eastern bluebird perches on a slender branch facing to the right, eastward toward the morning sun. Pale blue sky and some other out-of-focus trees and branches are in the background. The mood is contemplative but that bright blue, orange, and warm white of the bird add a note of cheer.
For a moment's respite from the insanity, noise, and confusion of life, please gaze upon this eastern bluebird. Repeat as needed. Algonkian Regional Park, Sterling, Virginia, USA 7-Apr-2026. #birds
A monochrome image of a complex scene with 4 black vultures, 3 on the ground one in-flight flying in from the left, on a rocky landscape. The boulders in the foreground where the vultures are perching are mostly white quartz, offering a stark contrast with the black bodies of the vultures. There are large granite boulders in the background, and part of one large tree trunk and some other small brush is visible in the background as well.
Encouraged a bit by @fotodefer.eurosky.social poetic review of my earlier image, here is another #monochrome #bnw effort I call "Black Vultures on White Quartz". My apologies for such a literal title, but that is what's in the image. 1-APR-2026. #birds #photography
Whoa, hold on! Wasn't all that White House renovation mayhem, including the gigantic ballroom supposed to have been paid for by 'private donations' (aka bribes). #politics #trump Liar, liar, pants on fire.
A monochrome image of a great blue heron perched amid boulders of various sizes and colors with dark rippling water flowing around them. Some of the lighter boulders are likely quartz, while the darker ones granite.
Not sure #wildlife in #monochrome really works, but here's my latest effort. Occoquan, Virginia, USA 1-APR-2026. CCs welcome. #birds #ClassicMono #photography
Here is an uncropped shot for anyone who wants more context. The posted photo is a heavy crop!
A great blue heron with its wings spread wide flying low above a shiny white boulder which is likely composed of quartz. The birds legs are tucked neatly together and trailing straight behind in the typical flight position. There is water flowing around the quartz boulder and a larger granite boulder in the background.
My submission for #birdoftheday #largebirdsinflight is a great blue heron with a full-body shadow, not in water, but pure quartz! (I hope I'm not mistaken here). Occoquan, Virginia, USA 1-APR-2026. ( 38.687, -77.265 ). #geologist comments welcome. #birds #geology #photography.
Four double-crested cormorant waterbirds are perched on large rocks amid gently cascading river water. The adults are in the center are almost entirely black except for their yellow hooked beaks. The juveniles on the sides are similar but with some brown coloring and prominent areas of white on the chest and throat. There are more large boulders in the background. The mood is peaceful and quiet but the flowing water adds an invigorating quality.
A family portrait of double-crested cormorants. The adults are in the center, the two outer birds with the white fronts are definitely juveniles. Occoquan, Virginia, USA 1-APR-2026. #birds
An adult bald eagle with its wings spread wide is flying low to the ground in front of a dense forest with large mature trees. There are many large gray boulders visible in the lower third of the scene. This image has a peaceful quality of unblemished nature.
One of the things I love about the bird subject detection of my #Nikon #Z8 #mirrorless camera is the ability to successfully track a bird across a cluttered forest background. My trusty #D500 #DSLR would almost always lose focus here. Bald Eagle, Occoquan, VA, USA 1-APR-2026 #birds #photography
Two osprey are perched atop a large nest of sticks. They are close to one another both facing toward the camera. The male on the left is slightly smaller and has a plain white chest, while the larger female has substantial mottled brown markings on the chest.
Ma and Pa osprey hanging out at the nest. That's Pa on the left and Ma on the right if my Googled osprey lore is correct. I suspect there may be some baby osprey down in the nest, but I never saw them. #birds Alexandria, Virginia, USA 31-MAR-2026.
A bald eagle has its wings spread wide in flight as it is about to land on its nest. Clutched in one talon is a large fish reflected shining in the bright morning sunlight. She is about to drop it into the nest to feed her young eaglet.
This female bald eagle left the nest briefly & came back with a beautiful fish. She had been carrying it with both talons most of the way and was just getting ready to drop it into the nest where at least one eagle awaited. Dyke Marsh Wildlife Preserve, Alexandria, Virginia, USA 31-MAR-2026 #birds
I need more posts like this in my feed! Gorgeous. Looked at it, took 3 deep breaths, and I could just feel my BP dropping.

A double-crested cormorant is seen in profile perched a top a metal-capped wooden dock post. The birds wings are spread in a downward position. The head is tilted up at a 45 degree angle and the beak is open wide and the downward-curving hook at the end of the top beak is prominent.
I see that #WingsOpenNotFlying is today's #BirdOfTheDay theme, and I think I have one that qualifies. Double-crested cormorant. I thought sure he/she would launch into flight, but it didn't happen. I think the wide open beak with that nasty hook on the end is a nice added feature. #birds
A wood duck drake swimming from right to left and toward the camera, facing into the morning sun. The multiple colors in the head and chest are very vivid.

A double-crested cormorant is perched atop a metal capped wooden deck post. The bird's body is facing to the right but the head is turned so it is looking directly at the viewer. In this view the bird's face looks a bit like a masked human face.
