We know why Iron Man didn't blow up in comics right after the start of the MCU: Civil War. The 2006 event (and following ones made to shame him as penance) made Iron Man the most hated man in comics; the films were digging him out of a massive PR hole comics put him through just a few months before.
It calls into question what do they consider as "viable" because the Avengers and Iron Man comics didn't necessarily blow up when the films were at their peak of popularity.
Most people aren't running out of the theater to see the same characters doing the same exact thing in the comics.

I think there’s been enough concrete evidence that yes, Marvel was trying to make The Inhumans more popular than the X-Men and diminish the X-Men brand until they gained the film rights. Just like right now we’re in a multi-year holding pattern until an eventual MCU-aligned relaunch.

Everything everyone believed about the film and TV business in the 70s was prefaced on the idea that media THEN was fractured (by race, region, language, "Generation Gap") - turned out the Boomers just had to get to their mid-20s and make/see 'blockbusters'
"Nobody watches late shows" ...but the nation rallied for *Jimmy Kimmel* (not even the top show!) as a free speech case. Podcasters and streamers have BILLIONS of subs but are simultaneously "Who?" in that same real world. It's generational and transitional.
That poll the other day that was deliberately phrased to get a negative opinion re: Piker and instead got a MASSIVE return on "Nobody actually knows who that is" was funny, but also very illustrative: The metrics are more "broken" than the audience is. This isn't a brand new phenomenon.
My actual answer to this is probably too long for Bsky, but suffice to say I'm of the view (and it has only strengthened, for me) that media is not actually as "fractured" as we're being told it is and also this perception will not hold for much longer.

I still do hope they involve Batman in some way in this film, could also be an opportunity to show who is going to be the DCU Batman.
It helps that for Clayface it was just a good script that Gunn said "yeah, let's make that." Rather than trying to make a cinematic universe out of villains and then making them all heroes, and having no clue what to do with any of them, either as movies or a connected franchise.
Spider-Man villain films still could work if someone actually cared enough to try.
If they're cackling mad scientist villains, why not just do an old 50s-60s sci-fi mad scientist-style movie with them, but in a big-budget form? I can see it working with the right crew.
It didn't happen from the jump, but Batman villains have developed these larger, almost operatic tragic stories around themselves that can hold up without Batman. Spider-Man villains are a lot of fun, but still mostly cackling mad scientists in it for the love of the game.
I will say this: Batman villains do lend themselves better to stand-alone Batman-free stories than Spider-Man villains do.
