This is so sad. I've lost (and am losing) so many brilliant colleagues over the last few months, in Sheffield and beyond. Can't help but think that if it was any other sector this would be much much bigger news.
This ought to be a huge national news story. But the quiet dismantling of a key sector barely registers outside HE. Maybe someone will care when the local economies that Unis sustain start to go bust too. Important story from @patrickjack.bsky.social & @timeshighered.bsky.social

In yet more devastating news, the VC has confirmed her plans to cut 80% of academic staff from Essex Pathways, our foundation year department. This would effectively close down all our existing foundation year programmes through the back door.
But it's not a done deal yet. Please share urgently.

An opening slide for my Foundation Year Network Annual Conference presentation
This is not like me. I've drafted my #FYNAC25 slides over a week before the deadline! So far got 22 people in the acknowledgements section which shows that doing cool stuff in UK HE right now is a massive team effort, especially if you want to stay sane(ish) whilst doing it.
Came back to work to GOOD news, that incredible colleagues across the #FoundationYear sector have collaborated to pass a motion @ucu.org.uk congress to recognise the importance of high quality Foundation Year provision.
