This work wouldnβt be possible without @valdeanda.bsky.social @archaeal.bsky.social @karthik-a.bsky.social Chris, Sunny, Anna, Kiley, and Jessica π¦ Thank you so much to everyone involved!!
So happy this is finally out! We reconstructed the 1st large-scale spatiotemporal dataset of 600+ MAGs from San Francisco Bay and show they have functional redundancy in key N and S pathways. These functions may better recover from disturbance in this highly urban estuary π§
Soil viruses are important regulators of ecosystem function, but what are their roles in environments that face long-term degradation and restoration? In our paper published today in Nature Micro, we asked how soil viruses influence peatland recovery, and vice versa. www.nature.com/articles/s41...
I was on this cruise! I remember looking it up and thinking a species of Planctoteuthis π¦π

New review paper on metabolic handoffs in microbiomes led by PhD student Katie Klier.
We define major types of metabolic handoffs, examine their drivers and benefits, & describe their importance in different complex microbial systems and environments.

New paper alert! We suggest caution in the analyses of viral auxiliary metabolic genes and propose a new overarching term - 'auxiliary viral genes' (AVGs) to describe different types of such genes. @simrouxvirus.bsky.social #phagesky #Microsky www.nature.com/articles/s41...
I had such a great time doing this podcast! Thanks @markowenmartin.bsky.social for the chance to talk about snails and their microbial friends.
I listen all the time and love the resources you provide with papers and lab websites. Thank you for making this Mark, itβs such a great and fun resource!! ππ«Ά
Love this podcast and love to hear @valdeanda.bsky.social talk science π₯Ήπ«Ά
Congratulations Andy, @oceanextremes.bsky.social, and team on this paper, which was a lot of fun to be a part of π
π¨ Iβm hiring a postdoc for Fall 2025 with experience in microbial βomics data analysis and phylogenetics/genomics. Projects will be centered around ancient microbial ecology & evolution. Click here for more information: bpb-us-e1.wpmucdn.com/wp.txstate.e...
Please share, thank you ππ»
Hydrology Paper of the Day @maggielangwig.bsky.social on how viruses evolved near deep-sea hydrothermal vents: a global perspective on genomes and taxonomy; how viruses are related; similarities along hydrothermal fields; host abundance and hydrothermal geology; and future research.
Same!! Thank you Mandy β€οΈ
Also big thank you to coauthors @rubystanacct.bsky.social @oceanextremes.bsky.social Anna-Louise, Chao, and Faith - your input made this work much stronger β€οΈ
Thank you George!! High praise coming from you π«Ά
Very excited this part of my PhD is out π We describe vent viral and microbial traits that govern viral biogeography and contribute to mounting evidence that these communities are highly endemic, and thus likely vulnerable to disruptive activities like deep sea mining

The Tufts graduate student detained by federal authorities in Somerville has been sent to a Louisiana detention facility, despite a federal judgeβs order telling US Immigration and Customs Enforcement not to remove her from Massachusetts without notice.
A little late, but I had a wonderful time at the 5th IBSE international symposium at IIT Madras. Thank you to @karthik-a.bsky.social and Karthik Raman for organizing a conference with an excellent collection of speakers and students.
Our lab had a great time at the IBSE Microbiome Symposium. Looking forward to this in the future again.
Amidst all the bad news, I still want to share two new preprints from our lab group. The first is led by newly minted Dr. Michelle Hauer, in collaboration with @karthik-a.bsky.social @katiekliermicrobe.bsky.social and @maggielangwig.bsky.social

NEW: Sources tell my office that Treasury Secretary Bessent has granted DOGE *full* access to this system. Social Security and Medicare benefits, grants, payments to government contractors, including those that compete directly with Musk's own companies. All of it.
I made a 2024 resolution to watch 100 movies new to me. I ended up watching 101! And then because I am nerd I decided to turn my movies into figures and data!
I did all this in R, which allowed me to make new figures and challenge my skills! I used all the Wes Anderson color package.
