"Does the sower
Sow by night,
Or the ploughman in darkness plough?

"Break this heavy chain,
That does freeze my bones around!"

An extract from "The Scriptorium Chronicle". Below the text is an illustration, done in a faux-medieval manuscript style, of a goose holding one wing out. There are two plants or trees either side of it (it's hard to say exactly what they are as they're not like any plants I've ever seen).

"Tenth Β§ In the Scriptorium today, we find the scribes busily making new quills.

It is not a coincidence that their dinner last night was goose, poached in a little light larceny."

Today the scribes are sharing an extract from "The Scriptorium Chronicle" in a desperate bid to flog a few copies of their new book. Far from being Good Friday, it is in fact Bad Friday as they haven't sold any.

More importantly, why does Earth get its own account?

This puts me in mind of Dickens’ Barnaby Rudge - his astonishing descriptions of the crowd scenes & hangings at Newgate prison are as vibrant as they are haunting. History teaches us so much about who we were, what we’ve changed & why the past does not hold all the answers to the problems of today.

Having given the lotr sequel some thought, I actually think it's possible to make a good film with this concept, if the writing consciously addresses nostalgia philosophically rather than simply playing into it. But that would be very, very difficult to pull off.

I've written almost 1k words today thus far, which is rather good considering where I was recently.

Time was, I would do more than that every day without fail.

You may even need a generational talent to do so. I'm not sure I believe that's what's behind the screenplay, without meaning to sound snobbish!

Considering I have been exhausted of late, I've made surprisingly fair progress on my current novel in my fantasy series, almost without realising it.

I hope that will be some comfort to anyone considering picking up my book!

Anyone else get like that?

I read a book a few years ago which is not considered a classic but even so seems to be well regarded as a fantasy book, and I found it so insufferable that you would have to pay me to read another book by the author (mind you, the prose was flat too).

These things can happen!

I don't approve of a Hunt for Gollum film; what's even the narrative through-line? But if they're going to do it they, may as well cast Bertie Carvel as Aragorn.

He could play other characters in the legendarium, but that's another matter.

Went to see the Manningtree Witches play (based on a book, if any of you have read it). Powerful, frenetic, and sombre, with a good bit of levity too.
