AI app generator slop is much more palatable to me than like Ghibli AI image generator slop. I plan on writing posts about how designers can avoid AI too

Opening up InDesign and having to reorient my brain to its clunky, outdated UX. Small example, but in the year 2025 InDesign and Illustrator still don't have the ability to hot swap colors from a 'selected colors' panel. Even the global styling panels feel archaic and unnecessarily complicated
somehow got suspended on the other app for posting this but here's what the macrodata refinement terminal would look like if it used material 3 components

Book Rec #5: Rocket Surgery Made Easy
Another banger from Steve Krug. A short companion piece for Don't Make Me Think focusing on usability testing.

Book Rec #4: Articulating Design Decisions
I cannot emphasize enough that you cannot just live in Figma. Visuals alone won't save you. You need to be able to articulate your 'why'. Your ability to communicate each and every decision to stakeholders is just as important as your design ability.

Book Rec #3: About Face
This is basically the Bible when it comes to interaction design. Everything you need to know about interaction design is in this book. If you were to only purchase one book from this list, it should be this IMHO.

Book Rec #2: Don't Make Me Think
This one is a classic. A short read, but a fundamental text on web usability. One of the first to address it too.

Book Rec #1: Thinking in Systems
Don't expect to just live in Figma or adopt the "pixel pusher" mindset. As a product designer you need to be able to understand complex systems and how each part interacts. This is important, more important than becoming a Figma encyclopedia.
Here is a link to the full blog/newsletter post, but I will post the TL:DR in this thread because the design community here is great

Drum pad thing in Figma
Will post the full thing in the morning but I'm working on getting better at skeuomorphism in Figma by making fake Teenage Engineering products
The one thing I would add are post options. I don't think *every* post should be shared between the different platforms, there should still be niches
Should I still make a Mastodon or Threads? What's the vibe?
Different ways of applying the illusion of dimension and texture without sacrificing accessibility or responsiveness
Learning Spline, but also trying to get better at faking 3D in Figma. Initially didn't understand the point of say, recreating physical objects, in Figma but it has actually been teaching me newer ways of approaching interface design
I've only used ChatGPT and Gemini to assist in drafting usage guidelines. Interested in trying out Tempo
Humans will continue to benefit from that for a long time. Don't feel discouraged.
Okay end of the thread.
