In Finnish folklore, a jumala is a god who rules over a wide domain (such as nature) while a haltija is more of a localized deity -- the supernatural protector of a particular place (such as a specific forest or lake) or the original progenitor of an animal species.

An unknown artist's early 20th century depiction of the Memegwesi, showing a young Algonquin girl, presumably falling into the "Indian Princess" trope, entering an autumnal forest and finding a whole tribe of tiny little indigenous American in the most cliche clothes possible damming up a creek to catch fish, having used wicker made by presumably the Algonquins. They have not noticed her yet.
Little people of the forest is a global phenomenon, a band of wild people who live in the forests, be they tricksters or friendly. Whether the Memegwesi seen by the Algonquin, the Nisse of Scandinavia, or the Menehune of Hawaii, watch out for the wild ones. #FolkloreSunday
Matthew Meyer's depiction of two kodama, whose tree form are thin skeletal trees with sparse greenage, and whose human form are two old people, one an old man in Buddhist-esque robes and a broom to clean its own leaves with, and a hunched over old woman with her own broom doing much the same.
If a tree reaches 100 years of age, its soul develops the ability to manifest out of its body. In Japan this is called a Kodama (木霊), a tree with a manifesting spirit. What form they take varies, and they can defend their forest with force. #FolkloreSunday

He was head of my research group in grad school and I spent a lot of time in his office. Both desks in there were disasters. Once I cleared away a stack of papers so I could do something on his computer and there behind the pile was a Nobel medal.
I've followed Steven Weinberg closely since late '60s. I'm a nobody. Just a huge fan. Steven Weinberg is the smartest human I was somewhat familiar with throughout his career. Tack sharp well into his 80s. I've never seen his desk.
