A famous young dog was Greyfriars Bobby - when his master died, he's said to have guarded his grave in Edinburgh's Greyfriars Kirkyard for 14 years, becoming a local and national celebrity. A memorial still stands just outside the churchyard. #MythologyMonday #folklore #dogs #gothic #mythology

One of the oldest tales of King Arthur is the hunt of the giant boar Twrch Trwyth, found in the sotry of Culhwch and Olwen.
Less remembered are the boar's piglets, though. They were every bit as brutal as the older boar, killing all but one of the hunters sent after them.

The Wandjina are supreme cloud and rain spirits from indigenous Australian myth. In cave paintings, they were portrayed with eyes and noses, but no mouths, because they're so powerful they don't need to speak. If they could speak, the rain would never stop. #MythologyMonday

The inspiration for Merlin was an alleged British prophet named Myrddin Wyllt. He supposedly wandered the forest, telling his prophecies to his only friend - a wild piglet. Geoffrey of Monmouth changed the piglet to a wolf when he wrote Myrddin's biography.
