Since They Won’t Remind You, Here’s What Drs. John Ioannidis, Jay Bhattacharya, and Scott Atlas, Actually Said 6 Years Ago The next time these doctors claim they were right, let's remind them exactly what they claim to have been right about.

As part of my efforts to combat the COVID Amnesia Project, let's accurately remember what 3 influential laptop class doctors from Stanford said 6 years ago as COVID overflowed hospitals and morgues.

They won't remind you.

I will.

My latest.

This isn’t about differing political opinions. It’s about a man who has presided over the destruction of American biomedical research. Bhattacharya deserves no homecoming @stanforduniversity.bsky.social. He should be shunned forever. Good riddance.

kind of astonishing that they are giving people TWO WEEKS to apply for the NIH Institute Director position at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. Almost as though they want to push through some hand-chosen political hack

Really excited about our new work on aphasia! Even in fairly profound aphasia, we can recover semantic maps through visual stimuli and use them to decode language. This is a big step! Language BCIs in aphasia might be possible!

OPEN PETITION TO UCSF LEADERSHIP Please click the link to complete this form.

I've just been asked to share this petition to UCSF, which asks them not to put Vinay Prasad back in his old position, now that HHS has given him the boot.

It seems a good ask, so here you go (the guy is awful):

I echo suggestions to say no to things and recalibrate your expectations for what needs to be done.

Also, making time for self care is important. Schedule those activities in your calendar — for yourself or with your family — as though they were work meetings.

Too easy to sacrifice self for work.

New paper out in @cp-neuron.bsky.social 🎉

What determines contextual modulation in V1? Why does the visual surround sometimes facilitate and sometimes suppress a neuron's response to its preferred stimulus?

SROs apparently only learned about this yesterday. I don’t know who is making these decisions, but I definitely think the review process will further be undermined by this change. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Why can't these folks ever just once say "Mitigation is how we cut down on infections, which is how we reduce variant evolution. Clean air and N95s are effective and variant-proof"?

How does the cerebellum contribute to cognitive functions? The role of the cerebellum in motor functions is well understood. But why is the same circuitry engaged in functions such as working memory, language, and social cognition? This Unsolved Mystery looks...

Also out today - A quick intro piece on the role of the cerebellum in cognition. What does it do? How will we find out? This is what @actlab.bsky.social and I think the critical questions are right now. It was fun to write - especially the section on evolution....

NIH is accepting public comments on its next Strategic Plan (2027-2031). You don't need to be a scientist. If you're a taxpayer, this is your money funding your health.

2x NIH POs told me: comments will be ignored by this admin, but not by the historical record. Silence will be inferred as support.

Applying machine learning to identify unrecognized COVID-19 deaths recorded as other causes of death in the United States A machine learning approach suggests that COVID-19 deaths were undercounted unevenly across sociodemographic groups in 2020–2021.

I'm not at all surprised by a 150,000 COVID death undercount. I suspect more than that. It's also going to be more undercounted as chronic and infectious disease sequela start to manifest themselves that were due to COVID get listed as other diseases.

Hopeless in Tehran Essays on neuroscience

Today I received a note from a grad student who lives in Tehran. Her note gives you firsthand experience of what it’s like to live in a city that is being bombed, and what it’s like to be young and feel despair about your future.
