When you give Toronto cops $1.4 billion per year, they have a lot of resources to waste.
On a new 🌾 @albertaadvantage.bsky.social 🌾 the team examine the province's reactionary backlash targeting trans people and children and unpack how it may be rooted in the cultural construction of childhood and education.

A tournament that’s been hosted by all manner of despots, fascists, and villains was never joyless. The joy has always been FIFA’s secret sauce. This is the first time there will be a joyless World Cup. Everything he touches….
When people are like, "Where is the money for X going to come from?" I'm like, the police budget. The money you are looking for is in the police budget. It's in police contracts (many of which mandate an annual increase--PVD's does) & police pensions, but it's also in things like the supply budget
A worker died at an Amazon warehouse in Oregon last week.
For more than an hour, workers were instructed to continue working as the man lay dead.
One worker wanted to help, but a manager told them to “Just turn around and not look. Let’s get back to work," according to @thewesternedge.bsky.social.
‘I wished for death’: Sexual violence in Israel’s prisons is an ‘organised state policy’ Palestinian testimonies reveal how sexual violence, including rape using objects and dogs, is approved by 'highest levels' of Israeli leadership
The testimony here about sexual violence by Israel against Palestinian prisoners is so beyond the pale everyone must see it.
It is so bad I can’t in good conscience share a quote other than the headline, which somehow manages to understate the horror within.

Avi Lewis waving as supporters gather behind him beneath a slogan: "The NDP comeback starts now."
To every volunteer, donor, organizer and NDP member who helped power this history-making movement: thank you.
We are building a new foundation for our party, and we are ready to come roaring back on the Canadian political stage. Let’s get to work!
Harm reduction saves lives. The Ontario government's decision to cut all public funding for supervised consumption sites in the province is a deadly policy decision that will result in more deaths from overdoses. Supervised consumption sites are a healthcare service for people who use drugs.
As a (former) labour rep, I've been saying this for years. Profit is secondary to control and power.
Capitalists don't hate unions for hurting profit; they hate unions for taking control from them and putting it in the hands of workers.
Accept this and a lot more about our world makes sense.

What a time of cruelty we live in, where we systematically strip away the very few resources we allocate for people with the least resources, the least rights: inmates, refugees, migrants, homeless people, and people who use drugs. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...
It serves a political purpose to create the problem of open air drug use across Ontario, especially in an urban centre like Toronto. Conservatives can claim that "crime is everywhere!" and weaponize the public's fear — no matter that they created the problem. No matter that thousands will die.
We are deeply concerned by reports that military commanders are framing the Iran war as “God’s plan” and invoking Armageddon in official briefings.
