Aren’t they so fluffy?

A group of recently fledged Great Horned Owls (Bubo virginianus) made an appearance on my college campus! After a couple of days, I managed to catch one looking at me rather inquisitively through the canopy of a tree as I took its photo.

Got some wicked Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) photos from a hike around Yolo County. It’s honestly always breathtaking as to how stunning these creatures are.

Interesting books found at my college’s semesterly book sale… They also had a 4th edition of Peterson’s Field Guide for the Central/East regions of North America. I’m thinking about picking up the 4th edition of his Western North American field guide to have the complete collection.

American Coots (Fulica americana) are some of the more beautiful waterfowl I’ve seen since I’ve started birding last year. It took me for a surprise when I found out these are more related to cranes than they are ducks! If they’re not ducks, why are they duck shaped?

I’ve also got a Killdeer (Charadrius vociferus) from Camanche Reservoir’s South Shore. The water was absolutely littered with White Pelicans, but seeing these guys scurrying along the muddy sand was a delight. Probably one of my favorite shorebirds of all time.

Female Common Merganser (Mergus merganser) I saw this past Friday drifting around in a fishing pond. Their red head always looks so strikingly beautiful!
