6/ And even where they exist, those laws depend on awareness and access. Extensive data shows that when people recognize risk, they often don’t feel empowered to act. Knowing when and what to do if risk factors present can be a matter of life or death for our friends and family members in crisis.

5/ We do have tools for prevention. Red flag laws, for example, allow families or law enforcement to temporarily remove firearms from someone showing signs of danger, with due process in place. But not every state has them, and in this case, Louisiana does not.

3/ Authorities described the Shreveport tragedy as an event of domestic violence. This isn’t random, 59% of mass shootings are related to domestic violence. In fact, 70 women are shot and killed by an intimate partner every single month in America from homicides, suicides, and mass shootings.

2/ On Sunday, a man shot and killed eight children ages 3 to 11. Events like this aren’t random—they reflect patterns we’ve seen again and again. Firearms are still the number one cause of death for children in the U.S. This includes homicides, suicides, and mass shootings.
