The lower two thirds of this image are filled with a leaf-choked vernal pool in the woods. The pool is filled with moss-covered branches and the occasional ferm poking here and there out of the water, and also a mossy stump on the far right. The upper third of the image shows the leaf-covered forest floor, and the lower parts of the trunks of two trees to the right and left. Ferns dot the shore of the pool. The late afternoon sun streams in diagonally across the water from the upper left to lower right, highlighting the bright greens of early spring in the lower left and leaving the upper right of the image in shadow. The pool is filled with the reflections of numerous trees, most of which are not in frame.
