My lab is recruiting post-docs! We study inter-organ communication using cutting-edge tools like proximity labeling (TurboID), in silico modeling (AlphaFold), and genome engineering (CRISPR). Come join us @UofUGenetics, Utah is beautiful! (View from our fly room 👇)
Huge thanks to my amazing co-authors, mentors, and lab mates! Also grateful to the @DRSC_TRiP and fly community for resources and support 🪰, @DamonRunyon and @NIH for funding.

Plasmids 🧬, cell lines 🧫, and fly lines 🪰are available NOW from @Addgene, @DrosDGRC, and Bloomington Drosophila Stock Center (BDSC)! A web-based portal to visualize our snRNA-seq data is at www.flyrnai.org/scRNA/body_l...

Why does this matter?💡
Mapping the sources of circulating proteins unlocks new ways to study biology and disease. This atlas can help others explore tissues (e.g. brain), proteins (e.g. Lectins), and processes (e.g. inter-organ communication) - or even discover biomarkers.

Amazingly, we also found tissue-specific secreted proteins that accumulate in entirely different tissues! These may be remote-control factors that allow two organs to communicate (aka inter-organ communication).
5/8
We discovered a gold mine of 535 circulating proteins! Highlights:
-Tissue-specific secreted proteins
-Unexpected sources like glia 🧠
-Shed ectodomains of transmembrane proteins
-Uncharacterized proteins
-Human-conserved proteins 🧬

We built an atlas of secreted proteins in Drosophila blood from 10 different tissues using complementary ‘omics tools 🧬- transgenic TurboID proximity labeling, mass spectrometry, single nucleus RNA-seq, and CRISPR knock-in flies.

Extracellular proteins are critical for basic biology (development, physiology, immunity, etc), and thousands circulate in our blood plasma🩸. We know they’re secreted from cells in different tissues… so… *which* tissues secrete *which* proteins?🤔 🤷

I’m thrilled to share a @biorxivpreprint for my postdoc work in the @PerrimonLab🎉. Together with our collaborators, we built a tissue-specific atlas of circulating secreted proteins in Drosophila 🧬🪰🧪🗺️.
