It’s my last day of being 40! Felt cute even though it’s soggy out
One side is trying to get bike lanes on a high-injury street, to hopefully prevent the next death or serious injury. One side is fighting to store their property in the public right of way. These things are not the same! But sure, "both sides" have made Hopkins "toxic"
Pro-parking people spread misinformation and counter-protest an event meant to honor those who have died of traffic violence. Some pro-safety person put stickers on some signs. These things are not the same!
I am so fucking sick of the both-sidesing that keeps happening re: Hopkins bike lanes. Pro-street safety folks want the city to try harder to keep them from dying and the pro-parking people want to keep parking in front of their destinations for free forever. These things are not the same.
Wide Amsterdam street jammed with colourful cars in the 1970s.
Remember this picture, & others like it, every time you hear someone in your city say "we're not Amsterdam."
This was #Amsterdam in the 1970s.
Many of the cities we admire made tough choices regarding cars in the past, and are still making better choices today.
Better choices instead of excuses.
I wish I was her niece so I could inherit some nice rocks
Aww, Aunt Linda. Rest in peace
oh shoot, I didn't mean for this to read like a love letter to a car. I was trying to say that since we sold our car, I haven't felt the need to drive one except to get my kid to harp lessons. (and now the teacher has moved to a new place that is 2 blocks from the greenway so I can bike again)
When a 1-unit house is replaced with ONE larger house, the new house is ~3X pricier. When replaced by 5+ houses, each new house will be (on avg) cheaper than the original house.

Change is part of the deal. Will we choose greater physical change, or greater price change?
...until I asked my neighbor to borrow his old Toyota. For the cost of a couple tanks of gas we arrived to harp lessons in relative comfort. There are a few other edge cases that make owning a car easier than renting but we are just fine without skiing or taking the dog on long road trips.
Last year my younger daughter said she wanted to learn to play the harp. We found 1 local teacher but her house was perched on the top of the steepest hill I have ever seen, impossible for a cargo bike and incredibly uncomfortable on foot. On hot days we arrived breathless and coated in sweat...
We started out as a 1-car household and after getting a couple e-bikes we got rid of the car in 2023. My family has saved thousands by not owning a car. The cost of occasional zipcars and lyfts pale in comparison to car payments, insurance, gas, parking, and repairs.
I love this post linked in the latest Bike Streets e-newsletter: bikestreets.com/book/the-aff...
Car ownership and maintenance is expensive. "There is no other way for cities to more quickly reduce the cost of living than building complete bike networks."

green paint really gets me going
awooga hubba hubba
group of about a dozen kids on bikes with 3-4 adults on Virginia St in Berkeley, heading west
Right after that I joined up with a big group of kids on bikes. I asked the closest adult if it was a bike bus and she said "we're on a bike field trip from Cornell Elementary in Albany" Fun!
Yesterday I was biking home from the gym and saw some workers painting new bike lanes on California St. They are paint only but better than sharrows so I gave the workers a big thumbs up and said "I like what you're doing" and one said "have a good day!" Thank you sir, I will
GAS IS STILL TOO CHEAP
Just go to a place where there’s ample parking and a kids activity in the sun, I guarantee there will be parents sitting in their cars with the AC on the entire hour and a half. I have witnessed this every day since soccer started up again.
We need to stop prioritizing parking lots over people.
Today, I assembled a roundtable to discuss our Building Up Illinois Developments Plan — and the consensus was that we need to act fast.
Looking forward to passing it and getting to work in our neighborhoods.
Wisteria from earlier today. I like that it’s climbing that evergreen #bloomscrolling
“It’s not my duty as Mayor to make sure you have a parking spot. It’s the same as if you bought a cow, or a refrigerator, and then ask me where you’re going to put them.“ — Miguel Anxo Fernandez Lores, mayor of Ponte Vedra, Spain. Graphic by the Urban Truth Collective.
Don’t buy a cow, or a car, and expect your city to give you someplace to park it. #UrbanTruth
Good for you for speaking up! What a slimeball

photo of a crowd of people on the NE corner of Hopkins and Monterey, holding up a big banner that says "Safe Streets Include Bike Lanes." Participants are holding up signs that say "Safety for All on Hopkins", "Kids need Hopkins bike lanes", "I bike and I vote", and "More Kids on Bikes" and more
Two young participants on Hopkins are holding up "Safety for all on Hopkins" and "I support Bike Lanes on Hopkins" signs as 2 cars pass. Across the street is a large crowd of young people with homemade signs that say "Bike Lanes are good 4 Everyone", "Build the Hopkins Bike Lanes", and "Honk if you love biking and walking"
It's been about 24 hours since we showed up for Hopkins and I'm still in a good mood. The vibes were immaculate and it was heartwarming to see so many people show up. Over the past 3 years I've felt isolated by the city's inaction on my street. Now I'm surrounded by friends. #BikeSafeBerkeley
I love little treat walks
